Discovering and managing Lenovo storage devices

XClarity One discovers and manages supported Lenovo ThinkSystem DG, and DM storage devices through XClarity One Hub. Discovery and management are done through the storage operating system.

Discovering devices​

Storage device cannot be discovered automatically by a hub. You must manually discover and manage these devices from the XClarity One portal. Storage device can be discovered using specific IPv4 addresses.

To discover devices, click the Device Management view, click Unmanaged Devices in the context menu, and then click the Add icon (Add icon) above the table. When the wizard opens, select Lenovo Storage for the device type, and then follow the steps in the wizard to complete the process.

Tip
You need to provide credentials to discover the storage devices.

Managing devices​

To manage discovered devices, click the Device Management view, click Unmanaged Devices in the context menu. Select the devices that you want to manage and click Manage devices icon (Manaage icon). Follow the steps in the wizard to complete the process.

Lenovo Storage DM and DG devices have an IP address for the cluster and each node. You can use any one of the IP addresses to discover and manage these devices.
Before managing devices, ensure the following prerequisites are met:

  • The latest firmware is installed on each device that you want to manage.

  • For devices that have a certificate signed by a private CA, import the custom certificate authorities (CAs) and intermediate CAs within the hub to allow the hub to trust the connection to those devices. See Device certificate chains.

  • If the hub that you intend to use to manage storage devices has a certificate signed by a private CA, import the custom certificate authorities (CAs) and intermediate CAs to the device truststore to allow the device to trust the connection to the hub.

During the management process, the hub:

  • (Lenovo Storage DM and DG devices) Creates a management user account named XC1_MGR_{last 8 chars of hub UUID} with an encrypted password on the device. The password is rotated automatically on a regular basis.

    After the management process is complete, the hub uses this XC1_MGR_* user account to connect to the device. The credentials that you provided during the management process are no longer used by the hub.

  • Collects inventory and vital product data.

  • Saves sensitive information in the vault.

  • Installs a certificate signed by the hub CA for the device to use as its server certificate if the current server certificate is self-signed.

  • Installs a client certificate to secure events sent from the device to the hub. The client certificate is valid for 90 days. The hub regenerates the client certificate on the device again 45 days before it expires.

  • Regenerates the HTTPS certificate on the device if the current HTTPS certificate is either self-signed or signed by another hub. The HTTPS certificate is valid for 90 days. The hub regenerates the HTTPS certificate on the device again 45 days before it expires.

    If the HTTPS certificate is signed by a third party, the hub sends an event and alert to XClarity One seven days before the expiration date.
