Backing up and restoring data on a SUSE Harvester host

When using Lenovo XClarity One as a local virtual machine, you might need to restore system data, settings, and imported files from a backup. Several alternatives are available to backup and restore an XClarity One that is running on a SUSE Harvester host. The specific process to use to restore from a backup are typically based on the process that was used to create the backup. This topic discusses how to backup and restore XClarity One running on SUSE Harvester.

Important

Ensure that a backup target is set up correctly by completing the following steps.

  1. Connect to the Harvester Web UI, and go to Advanced > Settings.

  2. Go to backup-target, click the ⋮ (three dots) menu icon in the top-right corner and select Edit Setting.

  3. Set the Type of backup target as NFS or S3.

  4. Enter the parameters and click Save.

After setting up the backup target, you can manually create a backup of XClarity One or schedule automatic backups.

Backing up XClarity One manually

To create a backup of XClarity One manually, complete the following steps.

  1. Connect to the Harvester Web UI, and go to Virtual Machines.

  2. Click the ⋮ (three dots) menu icon next to the XClarity One virtual machine, and click Take Backup.

  3. Enter a name for the backup, and click Create to start the backup process.

  4. After the backup is created successfully, you can view the backup in Backup and Snapshots > Virtual Machine Backups.

Schedule automatic backups of XClarity One

To schedule automatic backup of XClarity One, complete the following steps.

  1. Connect to the Harvester Web UI, and go to Backup and Snapshots > Virtual Machine Schedules.

  2. Click Create Schedule and select Backup.

  3. In Virtual Machine Name field, select the XClarity One virtual machine from the drop-down menu.

  4. In Cron schedule field, enter a cron expression to set the schedule.

    Note
    A cron expression is a string consisting of fields separated by white space. The fields define minute, hour, day of month, month, day of week. For example, 0 0 * * * defines 0 minute, 0 hour, every day of month, every month, every day of week; according to the definition, the automatic backup is created everyday at 0:00.
  5. In Retain field, enter the number of backups to be retained.

  6. In Max Failure field, enter the maximum number of consecutive backup failures to be allowed.

  7. Click Create.

  8. After the backups are created automatically, you can view the backups in Backup and Snapshots > Virtual Machine Backups.

Restoring XClarity One

To restore XClarity One using the backup that was created in the previous procedure, complete the following steps.

  1. Connect to the Harvester Web UI, and go to Backup and Snapshots > Virtual Machine Backups.

  2. Select the desired backup, and click Restore Backup.

  3. Select Create new to create a new virtual machine based on the selected backup, or select Replace existing to replace the existing XClarity One virtual machine with the selected backup.

  4. Click Create to start the process.

  5. You can view the restored virtual machine in Virtual Machines.
