Remove the GB200-NVL4 board

Use this information to remove the GB200-NVL4 board.

About this task

Required tools
  • Screwdriver for PH 2, T10, and T15 screws

  • GB200 NVL4 NVLink interposer board installation jig

  • GB200 NVL4 NVLink interposer board removal fixture

  • GB200 NVL4 TIM Jig

  • T15 screwdriver

  • T10 bit together with torque wrench

  • GPU cold plate handle assembly

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Turn off the corresponding DWC tray that you are going to perform the task on.

  • Disconnect all external cables from the enclosure.

  • Use extra force to disconnect QSFP cables if they are connected to the solution.

  • To avoid damaging the water loop, always use the water loop carrier when removing, installing or folding the water loop.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. Remove the tray from the enclosure. See Remove a tray from the enclosure.
    2. Remove the tray cover. See Remove the tray cover.
    3. Remove the cross bar. See Remove the cross bar.
    4. Remove the rear wall. See Remove the rear wall.
    5. Remove the NVLink bridge. See Remove the NVLink interposer board.
    6. (Left-side GB200-NVL4 board only) Remove the HMC module. See Remove the HMC module.
    7. Disconnect all the cables from the GB200-NVL4 board, CX8 mezzanine module, and MCIO breakout board. See Internal cable routing.
    8. Remove the CX8 mezzanine module. See Remove a CX8 mezzanine module.
    9. Remove the MCIO breakout board. See Remove the MCIO breakout board.
  2. There are two P12V middle bus bars in the tray, the right-side bus bar and the left-side bus bar. Decide which bus bar is to be removed, and remove and loosen screws according to the table and illustration below.
    Attention
    • When removing the right-side GB200-NVL4 board: remove the right-side bus bar.

    • When removing the left-side GB200-NVL4 board: remove the right-side bus bar; then, remove the left-side bus bar.

    1 Right-side bus bar:
    • 1a Remove two (2x) PH1 screws

    • 1b Loosen four (4x) T15 thumb screws

    2 Left-side bus bar:
    • 2a Remove one (1x) PH1 screws

    • 2b Loosen four (4x) T15 thumb screws

  3. Remove the eight (8x) screws from the P12V front bus bars.

  4. Remove the bus bar from the GB200-NVL4 board to be removed.
    Attention
    • When removing the right-side GB200-NVL4 board: remove the right-side bus bar.

    • When removing the left-side GB200-NVL4 board: remove the right-side bus bar; then, remove the left-side bus bar.

  5. Install the cross bar to the front of the tray.
    1. Align the cross bar with the screw holes on the tray side walls; then, install it to the tray.
    2. Install four (4x) screws to secure the cross bar to the tray.

  6. Remove the conduction plate from the GPU cold plate on top of the GB200-NVL4 board to be removed.
    1. Remove three screws from the conduction plate.
    2. Remove the conduction plate from the GPU cold plate on top of the GB200-NVL4 board to be removed.

  7. Using an alcohol cleaning pad, gently clean off the putty pads from the bottom side of the conduction plate and from the GPU cold plate.

  8. Install the GPU cold plate handle to the GB200-NVL4 board to be removed.

  9. Fasten eight (8x) thumbscrews to install the GPU cold plate handle. Make sure to follow the sequence shown in the illustration below.

  10. Lock the retaining thumbscrew on the GPU cold plate handle.
    1. Loosen the nut.
    2. Remove the nut and the washer from the GPU cold plate.
    3. Push the screw into the slot
    4. Re-install the nut and washer back to the GPU cold plate.
    5. Fasten the nut to the screw to secure handle to the GPU cold plate.

  11. Install the T15 extension bit to the torque screwdriver; then, loosen twenty-one (21x) T15 thumbscrews to release the GPU cold plate from the GB200-NVL4 board. Make sure to follow the sequence shown in the illustration below.
    • Screw 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 are ONLY for Dual CX8 mezzanine module configuration. Fasten/loosen fifteen (15x) screws for MCIO breakout board.

    • Installing the T15 extension bit to the torque screwdriver before loosening the screws.

  12. Install the GPU cold plate to the cross bar.
    1. Flip the GPU cold plate and place it on the cross bar.
    2. Fasten two (2x) PH2 thumb screws to secure the GPU cold plate to the cross bar.

  13. Using an alcohol cleaning pad, gently clean the PCM and putty pads on the GB200-NVL4 board that was not being replaced.

  14. Loosen five (5x) T10 thumb screws from the GB200-NVL4 board to be removed.

  15. Install the handles on the GB200-NVL4 board.
    1. Loosen the two handles that are stored in handle sockets in corner of the tray.
    2. Lift up the two handles.

    3. Install the two handles to the handle sockets on the GB200-NVL4 board, as shown in the illustration below.
    4. Fasten the handles to secure them to the board.

  16. Hold the handles and remove the GB200-NVL4 board from the tray.

  17. Remove the two handles.
    1. Loosen the two handles.
    2. Lift up the handles from the GB200-NVL4 board.

  18. Return the handles to handle slots in the tray.
    1. Install the handles to the handle slots in the corner of the tray.
    2. Fasten the handles to secure them to the tray.

If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.

Important
Before you return the processor board, make sure that you install the processor socket dust covers from the new system board. To replace a processor socket dust cover:
  1. Take a dust cover from the processor socket assembly on the new processor board and orient it correctly above the processor socket assembly on the removed processor board.

  2. Gently press down the dust cover legs to the processor socket assembly, pressing on the edges to avoid damage to the socket pins. You might hear a click when the dust cover is securely attached.

  3. Make sure that the dust cover is securely attached to the processor socket assembly.
