Installing the controllers

When you install controllers that will be added to an existing cluster, refer to the Hardware Installation and Maintenance Guide .

1. Obtain the Hardware Installation and Maintenance Guide for the respective model of the controller module that you plan to add to the cluster.

   The Hardware Installation and Maintenance Guide can be downloaded from the ThinkSystem Storage DM Series.

2. Follow the Preparing for installation section with the following exceptions:

   • You can skip any instructions about downloading software or a worksheet.

   • You must provide a serial console connection.

     You require a serial console because you must use the nodeshell CLI to configure node-management LIFs.

3. Follow the Installing the hardware section.
4. For different modles, follow different sections:

   • Cabling a switched cluster, unified network configuration

   • Cabling a switched cluster, Ethernet network configuration

   • Cabling controllers

   • Cabling controllers to your network

   If there are external expansion disk shelves, follow the Cabling storage on an HA pair with external drive shelves section.

5. Skip most of the Completing system setup and configuration section with the following exceptions:

   • Power on all disk shelves and check the shelf IDs to ensure they are all unique.

   • Cable the serial console so the node is accessible.
