SMB/CIFS File Access Reference Guide
This document is available in PDF format:
- Deciding whether to use the SMB/CIFS Reference
This guide describes ONTAP file access features available for the SMB protocol. It shows you how to enable a CIFS server, create shares, and enable Microsoft services. It includes planning guidance and detailed implementation instructions. - SMB server support
You can enable and configure SMB servers on storage virtual machines (SVMs) to let SMB clients access files on your cluster. - Managing SMB servers
After you set up an SMB/CIFS server, you can perform management tasks. For example, you can configure SMB server options, manage SMB server security settings, configure SMB and SMB signing, configure LDAP session security, manage oplocks, configure IPv6 SMB access, apply GPOs to SMB servers, manage domain controller connections, and manage the SMB server service. - Setting up file access using SMB
You must complete a number of steps to allow clients to access files using SMB on the CIFS-enabled storage virtual machine (SVM). - Managing file access using SMB
After you create and configure a CIFS server on your storage virtual machine (SVM) and set up file access over SMB shares, there are a number of tasks you might want to perform to manage file access. - Deploying SMB client-based services
You can deploy a number of SMB/CIFS client-based services, such as accessing files in Snapshot copies using the Previous Versions Windows Properties tab; and configuring offline folders, roaming profiles, and folder redirection. - Deploying SMB server-based services
You can deploy a number of SMB/CIFS server-based services that can provide you with enhanced functionality for your SMB deployment. CIFS server-based services include dynamic home directories, SMB access to Linux symbolic links, BranchCache remote office caching, automatic node referrals, ODX copy offload, and folder security using access-based enumeration (ABE). - Appendix: NFS and SMB file and directory naming dependencies
File and directory naming conventions depend on both the network clients’ operating systems and the file-sharing protocols, in addition to language settings on the ONTAP cluster and clients. - Contacting Support
