Technical rules for memory modules

Memory modules must be installed in a specific order based on the memory configuration of the server.

Numbers and the location of memory module slots

This server comes with four memory module slots. The following illustration shows the location of the memory module slots on the system board:
Figure 1. Location of the memory module slots on the system board

For a list of supported memory module options, see: Lenovo ServerProven website.

Supported type of memory modules

This server supports the following type of memory modules:
  • ThinkSystem 8GB TruDDR4 3200 MHz (1Rx8, 1.2V) ECC UDIMM

  • ThinkSystem 16GB TruDDR4 3200 MHz (2Rx8, 1.2V) ECC UDIMM

  • ThinkSystem 32GB TruDDR4 3200 MHz (2Rx8, 1.2V) ECC UDIMM

Memory mode and installation order

Independent mode

Independent mode provides high performance memory capability. You can populate all channels with no matching requirements. Individual channels can run at different memory module timings, but all channels must run at the same interface frequency.

Note
  • All memory modules to be installed must be the same type.

  • All memory modules to be installed must be the same capacity.

  • For best performance, make sure all memory modules have the same memory capacity, speed, and vendor.

  • Mixing single rank (1R) and dual-rank (2R) memory modules in the same memory channel or across memory channels are not allowed.

The following table shows the memory module installation order:
