Install a hot-swap power supply unit

Use this procedure to install a hot-swap power supply unit.

S001
shock hazard
DANGER
danger
Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.

To avoid a shock hazard:

  • Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet/source.
  • Connect any equipment that will be attached to this product to properly wired outlets/sources.
  • When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
  • Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage.
  • The device might have more than one power cord, to remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
S002
disconnect all power
CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

DANGER
danger
For -48V dc power supply, electrical current from power cords is hazardous.

To avoid a shock hazard:

  • To connect or disconnect -48V dc power cords when you need to remove/install redundancy power supply unit(s).
To Connect:To Disconnect:
  1. Turn OFF subject dc power source(s) and equipment(s) that are attached to this product.
  2. Install the power supply unit(s) into the system housing.
  3. Attach dc power cord(s) to the product.
    • Ensure correct polarity of -48 V dc connections: RTN is + and -Vin (typical -48 V) dc is -. Earth ground should be connected very well.
  4. Connect dc power cord(s) to subject power source(s).
  5. Turn ON all the power source(s).
  1. Disconnect or turn off the subject dc power source(s) (at the breaker panel) before removing the power supply unit(s).
  2. Remove the subject dc cord(s) and make sure the wire terminal of power cord(s) is insulated.
  3. Unplug the subject power supply unit(s) from the system housing.

CAUTION

Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has this label attached. Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside any component that has this label attached. There are no serviceable parts inside these components. If you suspect a problem with one of these parts, contact a service technician.

Following are the types of power supply units compatible to this server and notices to take during installation. These power supplies are designed for parallel operation. In the event of a power-supply failure, the redundant power supply continues to power the system. The server supports a maximum of two power supplies with N+1 redundancy support.
  • 750-watt platinum power supply
    • input power 115V or 230V ac
  • 1100-watt platinum power supply
    • input power 115V or 230V ac
  • 1600-watt platinum power supply
    • input power 230V ac
  • 2000-watt platinum power supply
    • input power 230V ac

Before installing a hot-swap power supply:

  1. Read the safety information and installation guidelines (see Safety and Installation Guidelines).

  2. Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.

  3. If the power supply unit to be installed comes with different wattage than the one that is already installed, turn off the server and peripheral devices, and disconnect the power cords and all external cables; then, remove the installed power supply unit (see Remove a hot-swap power supply unit).

Important
Do not mix power supplies with different wattages in the same server.

To install a power supply unit, complete the following steps:

  1. If you are installing the power supply into an empty bay, remove the power-supply filler panel from the power-supply bay.
  2. Grasp the handle on the rear of the power supply, and slide it into the power-supply bay until it clicks into place.
Figure 1. Power supply unit installation

    Note
    • Pull the handle to try if the power supply unit is properly installed. If it slides out, reinstall it.
    • Power supply 1 is on the bottom, while power supply 2 is on the top. For more details, see Rear view.
  3. Connect the power cord to the power supply unit, and make sure it's properly connected to the power.
