Replacing the system board

Use this information to replace the system board.

Important
  1. When you reassemble the components in the server, be sure to route all cables carefully so that they are not exposed to excessive pressure.
  2. When you replace the system board, you must either update the server with the latest firmware or restore the pre-existing firmware from a diskette or CD image. Make sure that you have the latest firmware or a copy of the pre-existing firmware before you proceed. See Updating the firmware, Updating the Universal Unique Identifier (UUID), and Updating the DMI/SMBIOS data for more information.
  3. When you replace the system board, make sure that you remove the Integrated Management Module Advanced Upgrade and place it on the new system board. For information about the Advanced Upgrade, see Using the remote presence and blue-screen capture features.
  4. Reactivate any Features on Demand features. Instructions for automating the activation of features and installing activation keys is in the Features on Demand User's Guide. To download the document, go to the Lenovo Features on Demand website, log in, and click Help.
  5. Some cluster solutions require specific code levels or coordinated code updates. If the device is part of a cluster solution, verify that the latest level of code is supported for the cluster solution before you update the code.

To install the system board, complete the following steps:

  1. Read the safety information that begins on Safety, Handling static-sensitive devices, and Installation guidelines.
  2. Grasp the system board handles to align the system board with the chassis; then, lower the system board into the chassis and slide the system board toward the rear of the server until the system board is seated firmly into the locator pins on the chassis.

    Make sure that all the system board standoffs engage the system board correctly.

  3. Fasten the two thumbscrews (one is near PCI slot 2 and one is between fans 4 and 5).

  4. For 2.5-inch hard disk drive server models, close the system board retention lever. For the 3.5-inch hard disk drive server models, press the blue release tabs and lower the battery or power module holder into the chassis.

  5. Reinstall the hot-swap fans (see Replacing a thermal kit (hot-swap fan)).
  6. (Trained technician only) Install the microprocessor and heat sink (see Replacing a microprocessor and heat sink).
  7. Reinstall the memory modules (see Memory module installation).
  8. Reinstall the ServeRAID SAS/SATA controller (see Replacing a ServeRAID SAS/SATA controller).
  9. Reconnect the cables to the system board that you disconnected before.
  10. Reinstall the PCI riser-card assemblies and adapters, if any were installed (see Replacing an adapter and Replacing a PCI riser-card assembly).
  11. Reinstall the air baffle (see Replacing the air baffle).
  12. Reinstall the cover (see Replacing the cover).
  13. Push the power supplies back into the server.
  14. Slide the server into the rack.
  15. Reconnect the power cords and any cables that you removed.
  16. Turn on the peripheral devices and the server.
  17. Start the Setup utility and reset the configuration.
    • Set the system date and time.
    • Set the power-on password.
    • Reconfigure the server.

  18. Either update the server with the latest RAID firmware or restore the pre-existing firmware from a diskette or CD image.
  19. Update the UUID (see Updating the Universal Unique Identifier (UUID)).
  20. Update the DMI/SMBIOS (see Updating the DMI/SMBIOS data).
  21. Reactivate any Features on Demand features.
