Hard disk drive problems

Use this information to resolve hard disk drive problems.

Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problem is solved.

The hard disk drive problems table is a two-column table that lists the symptoms and corrective actions for a hard disk drive failure. Column 1 lists the symptom. Column 2 describes the corrective actions for each symptom.

  • Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problem is solved.
  • See Parts listing, Types 7167 and 2590 to determine which components are customer replaceable units (CRU) and which components are field replaceable units (FRU) that must be replaced only by a trained service technician.
  • If an action step is preceded by (Trained service technician only), that step must be performed only by a trained service technician.

Compute node fails to recognize one drive
  1. Verify that the drive is supported for this compute node. Go to the Lenovo ServerProven website to see a list of supported hard disk drives.
  2. Make sure that the drive is seated in the drive bay properly and that there is no physical damage to the drive connectors.
  3. Replace the drive (see Removing a hot-swap hard disk drive and Installing a hot-swap hard disk drive).
  4. If the drive is still not recognized, replace the hard disk drive backplane (see Removing the hard disk drive backplaneand Installing the hard disk drive backplane).
  5. If the problem remains, replace the base assembly (see Removing and replacing the base assembly).
