Installation Guidelines

Before installing components in your rack solution, read the installation guidelines.

Before installing optional devices, read the following notices carefully:
Attention
Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.
  • Read the safety information and guidelines to ensure your safety at work:
  • Make sure the components you are installing are supported by your rack solution.

  • For more information about ordering parts:
    1. Go to Lenovo Data Center Support and navigate to the support page for your rack solution.

    2. Click Parts.

    3. Enter the serial number to view a listing of parts for your rack solution.

  • When you install a new rack solution, download and apply the latest firmware. This will help ensure that any known issues are addressed, and that your solution is ready to work with optimal performance. Go to Drivers and Software download website for Lenovo NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 to download firmware updates for your rack solution.
    Important
Some cluster solutions require specific code levels or coordinated code updates. If the component is part of a cluster solution, verify the latest Best Recipe code level menu for cluster supported firmware and driver before you update the code.
  • If you replace a part, such as an adapter, that contains firmware, you might also need to update the firmware for that part. For more information about updating firmware, see Update the firmware.

  • Keep the working area clean, and place removed components on a flat and smooth surface that does not shake or tilt.

  • Do not attempt to lift an object that might be too heavy for you. If you have to lift a heavy object, read the following precautions carefully:
    • Make sure that you can stand steadily without slipping.
    • Distribute the weight of the object equally between your feet.
    • Use a slow lifting force. Never move suddenly or twist when you lift a heavy object.
    • To avoid straining the muscles in your back, lift by standing or by pushing up with your leg muscles.
  • Back up all important data before you make changes related to the disk drives.

  • Have the following tools available.
    • Two 30L containers (one labeled with “Fresh” and one labeled with Waste") with integrated hose mounts
    • Air compressor
    • Approved coolant: PG25, NALCO® TCS101, or HPCCL2000 (Deionized water premixed with a compatible antimicrobial agent)
    • Compute tray shipping carton
    • Cordless transfer pump
    • Fresh deionized water
    • Lift tool
    • Liquid cooling service kit
    • NVLink connector covers
    • Phillips #1 bit
    • Phillips #2 bit
    • Quick connector caps
    • Reusable straps
    • Spill kit
    • Torque screwdriver
    • Torx T10 bit
    • Torx T25 bit
    • Torx T40 bit
  • You do not have to turn off the rack solution to remove or install hot-swap power supplies, hot-swap fans, or hot-plug USB devices. However, you must turn off the corresponding compute tray before you perform any steps that involve removing or installing adapter cables.

  • When replacing power supply units or fans, make sure to refer to redundancy rules for these components.

  • Blue on a component indicates touch points, where you can grip to remove a component from or install it in the compute tray, open or close a latch, and so on.

  • PSU with a release tab is a hot-swap PSU.

  • The red strip on the drives, adjacent to the release latch, indicates that the drive can be hot-swapped if the rack solution and operating system support hot-swap capability. This means that you can remove or install the drive while the rack solution is still running.
    Note
See the system specific instructions for removing or installing a hot-swap drive for any additional procedures that you might need to perform before you remove or install the drive.
  • After finishing working on the rack solution, make sure you reinstall all safety shields, guards, labels, and ground wires.

  • When installing multiple units, start with installing the heaviest device to the lowest part of the rack.

  • Do not block any air vents. Spare at least 15 cm (6 inches) of space for proper airflow.

  • Do not overload the power outlet when multiple devices are installed in the rack.

  • Service operation should only be performed by a Lenovo-certified technician. Individuals without Lenovo certification must have full access to relevant technical information, acknowledge their responsibility in performing the service operation, and understand the potential risks associated with it.
