Remove a 3.5-inch hot-swap drive backplane

Use this information to remove a 3.5-inch hot-swap drive backplane.

CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
Attention
  • Read Installation guidelines to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and disconnect all power cords for this task.

  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.

  • If the server is in a rack, remove it from the rack.

  • If foot stands are installed on the server, rotate them inwards and lay the server on its side for easier operation.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. Remove the server cover. See Remove the server cover.
    2. Remove all installed hot-swap drives and drive bay fillers (if any) from the drive bays. See Remove a hot-swap drive.
  2. Disconnect all the cables from the backplane.
  3. Remove the backplane.

    1. Open the plunger that secures the backplane.
    2. Slightly slide the backplane as shown to disengage it from the drive cage; then, remove the backplane from the drive cage.
