Windows instance gets a private IP address

A Windows instance receives a private IP address (169.254.x.x).

Cause

There are two scenarios that may cause this:

  • When Windows first boots up, it may temporarily receive a private IP address while it is identifying the network. In this case, it will receive a real IP after a few minutes.
  • When Windows machines cannot get an IP from the DHCP server, they will receive an auto-assigned private IP address. This can happen if there are no more IPs available in the VNET IP range or if the VNET services application is not running.
