Removing a system-board assembly

Use this information to remove a system-board assembly. There is a system-board assembly for both the upper and lower compute nodes. The upper and lower system-board assemblies are not the same and can not be interchanged. The procedure for removing both system-board assemblies is similar.

Note

This procedure should be performed only by trained service technicians.
If possible, back up all compute node settings, including the settings for any options installed in the compute node.

Before you remove a system-board assembly, complete the following steps:

Read Safety and Installation guidelines.
If the Flex System x222 Compute Node is installed in a chassis, remove it (see Removing a compute node from a chassis for instructions).
Carefully lay the compute node on a flat, static-protective surface, orienting the compute node with the bezel pointing toward the left.
Obtain the following for use during the replacement procedure (see Parts listing, Types 7916 and 2589).
- Alcohol wipes
- RFID tag (required only if replacing an upper compute node that came with an RFID tag attached to the bezel)
- Thermal grease

Important

When you replace a system-board assembly, you must update the compute node with the latest firmware or restore the preexisting firmware. Make sure that you have the latest firmware or a copy of the preexisting firmware before you proceed. See Updating firmware and device drivers for more information.

To remove a system-board assembly, complete the following steps:

Remove the upper compute node (see Removing the upper compute node).
Remove all of the installed components in the following list from the system-board assembly; then, place them on a static-protective surface or install them on the new system-board assembly.
- DIMMs and air baffles (see Removing a DIMM).
- If you are removing the system-board assembly from the lower compute node, the fabric connector (see Removing the fabric connector).
- USB flash drives (some models only) (see Removing a USB flash drive).
- If you are removing the system-board assembly from the lower compute node, I/O expansion adapters (some models only) (see Removing an I/O expansion adapter).
- Hard disk drives and hard disk drive bay fillers (see Removing a simple-swap hard disk drive or Removing a solid state drive).
- Solid state drive mounting sleeve (some models only) (see Removing a solid state drive mounting sleeve).
- Microprocessors, heat sinks, and microprocessor heat sink fillers. Use the microprocessor installation tool that comes with the CRU kit to remove each microprocessor from the system-board assembly and install each one immediately in the new system-board assembly (see Removing a microprocessor and heat sink and Installing a microprocessor and heat sink).
The new system-board assembly comes with an IBM Repair Identification (RID) tag. Using a ball point pen, transfer the machine type and serial number from the old system-board assembly to the two labels on the new IBM Repair Identification tag. If replacing the upper system-board assembly, place Tag 1 on the side of the upper tray assembly. If replacing the lower system-board assembly, place Tag 1 on the labeling tab and Tag 2 on the bottom of the lower tray assembly.

If you are instructed to return a system-board assembly, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
