Installing a DVD drive

Use this information to install a DVD drive.

If you are replacing a drive, make sure that:
  • You have all the cables and other equipment that are specified in the documentation that comes with the new drive.
  • You have checked the instructions that come with the new drive to determine whether you must set any switches or jumpers in the drive.
  • You have removed the blue optical drive rails from the side of the old drive and have them available for installation on the new drive.
Note
If you are installing a drive that contains a laser, observe the following safety precautions.

If you are replacing a server component in the server, you need to turn off the server and peripheral devices, and disconnect the power cords and all external cables.

To install the DVD drive, complete the following steps.

  1. Unlock and remove the left-side cover (see Removing the left-side cover).
  2. Open the bezel (see Opening the bezel media door).
  3. Remove the air baffle if installed (see Removing the air baffle).
  4. Remove the fan cage assembly (see Removing the fan cage assembly).
  5. Touch the static-protective package that contains the DVD drive to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove the DVD drive from the package.
  6. Install the blue rails on the DVD drive, using the holes nearest the center of the drive.
  7. Follow the instructions that come with the drive to set jumpers or switches, if there is any.
    Note
You might find it easier to install the new drive from the front and then attach the cables.
  8. Align the rails on the DVD drive with the guides in the drive bay; then, slide the DVD drive into the drive bay until the rails click into place.
