Server models with eight 3.5-inch drives
Use this section to understand the cable routing for server models with eight 3.5-inch drives.
Server model: eight 3.5-inch hot-swap drives, one 8i RAID/HBA adapter
Note
The following illustration is based on the scenario that the RAID/HBA adapter is installed in PCIe slot 4 on the system board. If there is a serial port module installed in PCIe slot 4, the RAID/HBA adapter will be installed in PCIe slot 1 on riser 1. In both scenarios, the cable connections are the same.
Figure 1. Cable routing for server models with eight 3.5-inch hot-swap drives and one 8i RAID/HBA adapter
Cable | From | To |
---|---|---|
1 Power cable | Power connector on the backplane | Backplane power connector 1 on the system board |
2 SAS signal cable* | SAS 0 and SAS 1 connectors on the backplane | HBA/RAID adapter:

Note
*When Gen 4 HBA/RAID adapter is installed, ensure you use Gen 4 SAS signal cable (ThinkSystem SR550/SR590/SR650 3.5" SAS/SATA 8-Bay X40 RAID Cable Kit).
Server model: eight 3.5-inch simple-swap drives
Figure 2. Cable routing for server models with eight 3.5-inch simple-swap drives
The simple-swap drive backplate assembly comes with two power cables and two signal cables. Connect the cables to the system board.
From | To |
---|---|
1 Power cable labeled with 0 | Backplane power connector 1 on the system board |
2 Power cable labeled with 1 | Backplane power connector 2 on the system board |
3 Mini-SAS cable labeled with 0 | SATA 0-3 connector on the system board |
4 Mini-SAS cable labeled with 1 | SATA 4-7 connector on the system board |
