Server models with twelve 3.5-inch drives

Use this section to understand the cable routing for server models with twelve 3.5-inch drives.

Server model: twelve 3.5-inch SAS/SATA drives, one 16i RAID/HBA adapter

Note
The following illustration is based on the scenario that the RAID/HBA adapter is installed in PCIe slot 4 on the system board. If there is a serial port module installed in PCIe slot 4, the RAID/HBA adapter will be installed in:
  • PCIe slot 1 on riser 1 if there is no rear hot-swap drive assembly installed

  • PCIe slot 6 on riser 2 if there is a rear hot-swap drive assembly installed

For both scenarios, the cable connections are the same.

3 SAS signal cable*SAS 0, SAS 1, and SAS 2 connectors on the backplane
HBA/RAID adapter:
  • Gen 3: C0C1C2

  • Gen 4: C0C1

Note
*When Gen 4 HBA/RAID adapter is installed, ensure you use Gen 4 SAS signal cable (ThinkSystem SR590/SR650 3.5" SAS/SATA/AnyBay 12-Bay X40 RAID Cable Kit).

Server model: eight 3.5-inch SAS/SATA drives, four 3.5-inch NVMe drives, one 8i RAID/HBA adapter

Note

If there is a serial port module installed in PCIe slot 4, the RAID/HBA adapter will be installed in PCIe slot 1 on riser 1. For both scenarios, the cable connections are the same.
