Remove a GPU adapter

Follow instructions in this section to remove a GPU adapter.

About this task

Attention

  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the server.

  • If the server is installed in a rack, slide the server out on its rack slide rails to gain access to the top cover, or remove the server from the rack. See Remove the server from rack.

  • Depending on the specific type, your GPU adapter might look slightly different from the illustrations in this section.

  • Follow the additional instructions in any documentation that comes with your GPU adapter.

Procedure

  1. Prepare your server.
    1. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    2. Remove the GPU adapter link bridge(s) if installed. See Remove a GPU adapter link bridge.
      Note
      Depending on the configuration, there may be one or three GPU adapter link bridges on the GPU.
  2. Remove the GPU adapter.

    1. Locate the GPU adapter that you want to remove and disconnect the power cable from the GPU adapter.
    2. Remove the GPU adapter retention screw.
    3. Grasp the GPU adapter by its edges and carefully pull it out of the PCIe slot.
      Note
      Press on the plastic latch on the rear end to ensure that the GPU adapter can be removed from the chassis smoothly.


After you finish

  1. Install a replacement unit or a slot bracket. See Install a GPU adapter.

  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.

  3. If the GPU adapter link bridge was removed, reinstall the link connector cover back to the GPU. If you do not have the original link connector cover on hand, use the one on the new GPU adapter.
