Install the heat sink and the fan module

Follow this procedure to install the heat sink and the fan module. This procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

Power off the server for this task

CAUTION

The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

Before installing the heat sink and the fan module:

1. Install the processor if one is not yet installed (see Install the processor).

2. If you are installing a replacement heat sink and fan module, remove the frame.

3. Install the frame to the bottom of the system board if necessary.

To install the heat sink and the fan module, complete the following steps:

1. Align the four screws on the heat sink and fan assembly with the corresponding screw holes on the system board. Make sure the fan cable is close to the heat sink fan connector (See Cable routing for the fans).

2. Tighten screw 1 and 2:
   1. Partially tighten screw 1.
   2. Fully tighten screw 2.
   3. Fully tighten screw 1.

3. Tighten screw 3 and 4:
   1. Partially tighten screw 3.
   2. Fully tighten screw 4.
   3. Fully tighten screw 3.
4. Connect the fan cable to the system board.
