Remove the heat sink and fan module

Follow this procedure to remove the heat sink and fan module. This procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
Before removing the heat sink and fan module:
  1. Read the safety information and installation guidelines (see Safety and Installation guidelines).

  2. Turn off the server and peripheral devices, and disconnect the power cords and all external cables (see Power off the server).

  3. If the server is in a rack, remove it from the rack.

  4. Remove any locking device that secures the server cover, such as a Kensington lock or a pad lock.

  5. Remove the server cover (see Remove the server cover).
    CAUTION
    The heat sinks and processor could be very hot. To avoid from burning yourself, wait for a few minutes after turning off the server before you remove the server cover.
  6. Place the server on its side with the cover up.

  7. Remove the system board (see Remove the system board (trained technician only)).

To remove the heat sink and fan module, complete the following steps:

  1. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board.
    Note

    Follow the instructions in Internal cable routing and handle the release tab on the connector carefully.

  2. Loosen screw 1 and 2:

    1. Gently remove the four screws to avoid any possible damage to the system board.

    2. Always keep the four screws attached to the heat sink and fan module.

    3. Do not touch the thermal grease while handling the heat sink and fan module.

    1. Partially loosen screw 1.
    2. Fully loosen screw 2.
    3. Fully loosen screw 1.
  3. Loosen screw 3 and 4:
    1. Partially loosen screw 3.
    2. Fully loosen screw 4.
    3. Fully loosen screw 3.

  4. Evenly lift the heat sink and fan module, and remove it from the system board.

After removing the heat sink and fan module:

  1. If you will reuse the heat sink and fan module, remove the frame from the bottom of the system board for later use.

  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
