Performance, ease of use, reliability, and expansion capabilities were key considerations in the design of your server. These design features make it possible for you to customize the system hardware to meet your needs today and provide flexible expansion capabilities for the future.

Your server implements the following features and technologies:
  • Features on Demand

If a Features on Demand feature is integrated in the server or in an optional device that is installed in the server, you can purchase an activation key to activate the feature. For information about Features on Demand, see:

    Lenovo Features on Demand website

  • Flexible network support

The server has an Open Compute Project (OCP) 3.0 slot for an OCP 3.0 Ethernet adapter, which provides two or four network connectors for network support.

  • Integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM)

This integrated security chip performs cryptographic functions and stores private and public secure keys. It provides the hardware support for the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) specification. You can download the software to support the TCG specification. For more information on TPM configurations, see Configure security settings in Maintenance Manual.

TPM 1.2 is supported on server models with 7002 series processors and UEFI firmware before version 2.02 at the same time.

  • Large system-memory capacity

The server supports up to 32 TruDDR4 registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) or three-dimensional stacking registered DIMMs (3DS RDIMMs). For more about the specific types and maximum amount of memory, see Technical specifications.

  • Large data-storage capacity and hot-swap capability

The hot-swap server models support a maximum of fourteen 3.5-inch hot-swap Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drives or hot-swap Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drives. The simple-swap server models support a maximum of eight 3.5-inch simple-swap SATA hard disk drives.

With the hot-swap feature, you can add, remove, or replace hard disk drives without turning off the server.

  • System management tools

The server supports the following tools to enable easier and more efficient server management process.

    • Lenovo XClarity Controller

Lenovo XClarity Controller (XCC) supported version varies by product. All versions of Lenovo XClarity Controller are referred to as Lenovo XClarity Controller and XCC in this document, unless specified otherwise. To see the XCC version supported by your server, go to Lenovo XClarity Controller portal page.

    • Lenovo XClarity Administrator

    • Lenovo XClarity Essentials toolset

    • Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager

Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager (LXPM) supported version varies by product. All versions of Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager are referred to as Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager and LXPM in this document, unless specified otherwise. To see the LXPM version supported by your server, go to Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager portal page.

    • Lenovo XClarity Integrator

    • Lenovo XClarity Energy Manager

    • Lenovo Capacity Planner

    For details, see Management options.

  • Light path diagnostics

Light path diagnostics provides LEDs to help you diagnose problems and an integrated LCD diagnostics panel or external diagnostics handset can provide additional diagnostic information. For more information about the light path diagnostics, see the following:
  • Mobile access to Lenovo Service Information website

The server provides a QR code on the system service label, which is on the cover of the server, that you can scan using a QR code reader and scanner with a mobile device to get quick access to the Lenovo Service Information website. The Lenovo Service Information website provides additional information for parts installation, replacement videos, and error codes for server support.

  • Redundant networking connection

The Lenovo XClarity Controller provides failover capability to a redundant Ethernet connection with the applicable application installed. If a problem occurs with the primary Ethernet connection, all Ethernet traffic that is associated with the primary connection is automatically switched to the optional redundant Ethernet connection. If the applicable device drivers are installed, this switching occurs without data loss and without user intervention.

  • Redundant cooling and optional power capabilities

The server supports a maximum of two hot-swap power supplies and six hot-swap fans, which provide redundancy for a typical configuration. The redundant cooling by the fans in the server enables continued operation if one of the fans fails.

  • ThinkSystem RAID support

The ThinkSystem RAID adapter provides hardware redundant array of independent disks (RAID) support to create configurations. The standard RAID adapter provides RAID levels 0 and 1. An optional RAID adapter is available for purchase.

  • UEFI-compliant server firmware

Lenovo ThinkSystem firmware is Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) compliant. UEFI replaces BIOS and defines a standard interface between the operating system, platform firmware, and external devices.

Lenovo ThinkSystem servers are capable of booting UEFI-compliant operating systems, BIOS-based operating systems, and BIOS-based adapters as well as UEFI-compliant adapters.

The server does not support Disk Operating System (DOS).
