Install a PCIe riser

Follow instructions in this section to install a PCIe riser.

About this task

Attention

  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.

Note
To maintain proper system cooling, do not operate the server without a PCIe riser or a rise filler installed in the chassis.

Select the PCIe riser installation scenario

There are three PCIe riser installation scenarios differentiated by PCIe riser location and serial port installation. See corresponding instructions below for proper installation procedure.

  1. Installing PCIe riser 1 or PCIe riser 2 without serial port module installed. See Install a PCIe riser without serial port.

  3. Installing PCIer riser 2 installed with serial port module. See Install PCIe riser 2 installed with serial port.

Install a PCIe riser without serial port​

Procedure

Install the PCIe riser.
  1. Align the guide hole on the PCIe riser to the guide post on system board, and insert the PCIe riser into the PCIe slots on system board.
  2. Fasten the thumbscrew to secure the PCIe riser.

Install PCIe riser 1 installed with serial port​

Procedure

  1. If PCIe riser 2 is installed, remove it. See Remove a PCIe riser.
  2. Install the PCIe riser.
    Attention
    Make sure the serial port cable is routed through the cable clip inside the PCIe riser.
    1. Align the guide hole on the PCIe riser to the guide post on system board, and insert the PCIe riser into the PCIe slots on system board.
    2. Fasten the thumbscrew to secure the PCIe riser.
    3. Connect serial port cable to serial port connector on system board.

Install PCIe riser 2 installed with serial port​

Procedure

1. Install the PCIe riser.
Attention
Make sure the serial port cable is routed through the cable clip inside the PCIe riser.
  1. Connect serial port cable to serial port connector on system board.
  2. Align the guide hole on the PCIe riser to the guide post on system board, and insert the PCIe riser into the PCIe slots on system board.
  3. Fasten the thumbscrew to secure the PCIe riser.

After you finish

  1. Reconnect the required cables.

  2. Reinstall the PCIe riser 2 if needed. See Install a PCIe riser.

  3. Complete the parts replacement. See Complete the parts replacement.
