Remove a PCIe riser

Follow instructions in this section to remove a PCIe riser.

About this task

Attention
Note
To maintain proper system cooling, do not operate the server without a PCIe riser or a rise filler installed in the chassis.

Select the PCIe riser removal scenario

There are three PCIe riser removal scenarios differentiated by PCIe riser location and serial port installation. See corresponding instructions below for proper removal procedure.
Figure 1. PCIe riser locations

  1. Removing PCIe riser 1 or PCIe riser 2 without serial port module installed. See Remove a PCIe riser without serial port.

  2. Removing PCIe riser 1 installed with serial port module. See Remove PCIe riser 1 installed with serial port.

  3. Removing PCIer riser 2 installed with serial port module. See Remove PCIe riser 2 installed with serial port.

Remove a PCIe riser without serial port

Procedure

  1. Prepare your server.
    1. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    2. Disconnect cables that are connected to the PCIe riser and the PCIe adapter.
  2. Remove the PCIe riser.
    1. Unfasten the thumbscrew on the PCIe riser.
    2. Lift the PCIe riser out of the chassis.

Remove PCIe riser 1 installed with serial port

Procedure

  1. Prepare your server.
    1. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    2. Disconnect cables that are connected to the PCIe riser and the PCIe adapter.
  2. If PCIe riser 2 is installed, remove it from chassis. See Remove a PCIe riser without serial port.
  3. Remove the PCIe riser 1 installed with serial port.
    1. Disconnect serial port cable from system board.
    2. Unfasten the thumbscrew on the PCIe riser.
    3. Lift the PCIe riser out of the chassis.

Remove PCIe riser 2 installed with serial port

Procedure

    2. Slightly lift up the PCIe riser, and disconnect the serial port cable from the system board.
    3. Lift the PCIe riser out of the chassis.

After you finish
  1. If no PCIe riser is going to be installed to the chassis, install a riser filler into the chassis. See Install a PCIe riser.

  2. Reinstall the PCIe riser 2 if needed. See Install a PCIe riser.

  3. To replace the PCIe adapter, see Remove a PCIe adapter.

  4. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
