Remove the system I/O board

Follow instructions in this section to remove the system I/O board. The procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

About this task

Important
This task must be operated by trained technicians that are certified by Lenovo Service. Do not attempt to remove or install the part without proper training and qualification.
Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.
  • Power off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the server.
  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.
  • After replacing the system I/O board, update the firmware to the specific version supported by the server. Make sure that you have the required firmware or a copy of the pre-existing firmware before you proceed.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. Perform OneCLI commands or XCC actions to back up the UEFI and XCC settings. See OneCLI commands that backup configuration settings or Using XCC to back up tconfiguration.
    2. Pull the system shuttle to the stop position.
      1. Press the two blue release latches.
      2. Rotate the two release levers until they are perpendicular to the shuttle.
      3. Pull the shuttle forward until it stops.

    3. Remove the front fan cage. See Remove the front fan cage.
  2. Disconnect the FPC cable from the system I/O board.

    2. Gently disconnect the cable from the system I/O board.
  3. Remove the system I/O board.
    1. Loosen the four screws securing both the system I/O board and the cable.
    2. Slide the system I/O board backward until the notches are aligned to the retainer as illustrated; then, lift the system I/O board out of the NVMe drive and PCIe switch board cage.
    3. Disconnect the cable from the system I/O board.
