Remove the front fan

Follow this procedure to remove the front fan.

CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

Before removing the front fan:

  1. Read the safety information and installation guidelines (see Safety and Installation guidelines).

  2. Turn off the server and peripheral devices, and disconnect the power cords and all external cables (see Power off the server).

  3. If the server is in a rack, remove it from the rack.

  4. Remove any locking device that secures the server cover, such as a Kensington lock or a pad lock.

  5. Remove the server cover (see Remove the server cover).
    CAUTION
    The heat sinks and processor could be very hot. To avoid from burning yourself, wait for a few minutes after turning off the server before you remove the server cover.
  6. Remove the front bezel (see Remove the front bezel).

To remove the front fan, complete the following steps:

  1. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board; then, route the cable out from the chassis.

    Follow the instructions in Internal cable routing and handle the release tab on the connector carefully.

  2. Lift the fan slightly to detach and remove it from the chassis.

After removing the front fan:
  1. Install a new front fan (see Install the front fan).

  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
