Installing the 8x2.5-inch hot-swap HDD assembly kit with expander

Use this information to add eight 2.5-inch hard-disk-drive bays in the server.

You can install an Lenovo System x3650 M4 HD Plus Eight 2.5-inch Hot-Swap HDD Assembly Kit with Expander to add eight additional 2.5-inch hot-swap hard-disk-drive bays in the server. See the Lenovo ServerProven website for a list of supported optional devices. To order a 8x2.5-inch hot-swap HDD assembly kit with expander, contact your Lenovo sales representative or Lenovo reseller.

The 8x2.5-inch hot-swap HDD assembly kit with expander contains the following components:

• One expander
• One backplane connection cable
• Two screws
• One power cable
• One configuration cable
• Eight 2.5-inch HDD fillers

To install the 8x2.5-inch hot-swap HDD assembly kit with expander, complete the following steps:

1. Read the safety information that begins on Safety and Installation guidelines.
2. Remove the cover (see Removing the cover).
3. Touch the static-protective package that contains the expander to any unpainted surface on the outside of the server; then, grasp the expander and remove it from the package.
4. Install the expander in the farthest slot from the power supplies.

   1. Align the tabs on the bottom of the expander with the slots on the bottom of the backplane cage.
   2. Insert the expander tabs into slots on the bottom of the backplane cage and push the expander forward into the retention latch (on top of the backplane cage) until the expander is locked in place.
5. Connect the backplane connection cable, power cable, and the configuration cable.

6. Remove the two 4-drive filler panels from the right side.

7. Install the hard disk drives, if any (see Installing a hot-swap drive).
8. Install the 2.5-inch HDD fillers into empty drives.
