Remove an M.2 drive from a compute tray

Follow instructions in this section to remove an M.2 drive from a compute tray. The procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.
  • Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
  • Power off the compute tray and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the rack solution.
  • Slide the compute tray out on the rails to access the top cover, or remove it from the rack entirely. See Remove a compute tray from the rack.
  • If one or more NVMe solid-state drives are to be removed, it is recommended to disable them beforehand via the operating system.
  • Before you remove or make changes to drives, drive controllers, drive backplanes or drive cables, back up all important data that is stored on drives.

Procedure

  1. Remove the top cover.
    1. Loosen the four screws screw from the top cover.
    2. Press the latches on both sides of the top cover and slide it slightly toward the rear; then, lift the top cover off the compute tray.

  4. Remove the M.2 drive.
    1. Loosen the screw securing the M.2 drive.
    2. Rotate the rear end of the M.2 drive to an angle of approximately 15 degrees.
    3. Remove the M.2 drive from the M.2 backplane.

After you finish

If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
