Mirror consistency group role conflict

A mirror consistency group holds the same role (primary or secondary) on both this (local) storage array and the remote storage array. This problem typically occurs when a role change operation was attempted while there was a connection problem between this storage array and the remote storage array. As a result, the role of the mirror consistency group was forced to primary or secondary on only one side. When the connection was re-established between the two storage arrays, the forced promotion resulted in both sides holding the same role.

Important
  • If there is a dual primary role conflict, both sides of the mirror consistency group are capable of receiving writes. If both sides received write requests, the mirror consistency group that you demote to the secondary role will discard the write requests so resynchronized can occur.

  • If there is a dual secondary role conflict, no new writes will occur and promoting one side to the primary role will not have any consequences.

  • This problem will be reported on both this storage array and the remote storage array; however, the storage array used to complete the recovery steps will depend on which side of the mirror consistency group you promote to primary or demote to secondary.

Recovery Steps

  1. Does the affected mirror consistency group shown in the Details area have a dual primary role conflict or dual secondary role conflict?

    • If dual primary role conflict, go to step 2.

    • If dual secondary role conflict, go to step 3.

  2. Demote one side of the mirror consistency group to the secondary role, and then go to step 4

    1. Identify which side (this storage array or the remote storage array) of the mirror consistency group you want to demote.

    2. Launch the appropriate storage management software for the storage array that has the side you want to demote to secondary.

    3. Go to Storage > Asynchronous Mirroring. Then, select the Mirror Consistency Groups tab

    4. Highlight the affected mirror consistency group and then select Change role under More.

    5. Go to step 4.

  3. Promote one side of the mirror consistency group to the primary role, and then go to step 4

    1. Identify which side (this storage array or the remote storage array) of the mirror consistency group you want to promote.

    2. Launch the appropriate storage management software for the storage array that has the side you want to promote to primary.

    3. Go to Storage > Asynchronous Mirroring. Then, select the Mirror Consistency Groups tab

    4. Highlight the affected mirror consistency group and then select Change role under More.

    5. Go to step 4.

  4. Select Recheck to ensure the problem has been resolved.
