Remove the CMOS battery from the SMM

Use this information to remove the CMOS battery from the SMM.

To avoid potential danger, read and follow the following safety statements.

    disconnect all power
    CAUTION
    The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

    When replacing the lithium battery, use only Lenovo specified part number or an equivalent type battery recommended by the manufacturer. If your system has a module containing a lithium battery, replace it only with the same module type made by the same manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and can explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of.

    Do not:
    • Throw or immerse into water
    • Heat to more than 100°C (212°F)
    • Repair or disassemble

    Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations.

Before you remove the CMOS battery from the SMM:
  1. Read the following section(s) to ensure that you work safely.
  2. Remove the SMM (see Remove the System Management Module (SMM)).

Make sure to read the following notes carefully before replacing the CMOS battery in the SMM.
  • When replacing the battery, you must replace it with another CMOS battery of the exact same type made by the same manufacturer.
  • To order replacement batteries, call 1-800-426-7378 in the United States, and 1-800-465-7999 or 1-800-465-6666 in Canada. Outside the U.S. and Canada, call your Lenovo marketing representative or authorized reseller.
  • After you replace the battery, you must reconfigure the time settings.
  • To avoid possible danger, read and follow the following safety statement.

Complete the following steps to remove the CMOS battery from the SMM.

  1. Locate the battery on the SMM.

  2. Gently press the battery retaining clip with your fingernail. The battery should pop free from the socket.

    Attention
    Do not lift the battery with excessive force, as it may cause damages to the socket on the SMM. Consequently, it might be necessary to replace the SMM.
  3. Lift the battery from the socket.
  4. Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations. See the Environmental Notices and User's Guide for more information.

If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
