Multi-server configurations

See this section to learn how to route cables for multi-server configuration.

Multiple nodes within or across chassis could be connected with Ethernet cables as illustrated.

Note
  • For multi-server configuration, make sure to install a ThinkSystem OCP 4 to 1 Management Port Consolidation Adapter and set UEFI setup > BMC settings > Network Settings > Network Interface port to Uplink MAC.

  • All ThinkSystem servers supporting ThinkSystem OCP 4 to 1 Management Port Consolidation Adapter can be chained in multi-server configurations through the adapter.

  • For ThinkSystem SR650 V4, ThinkSystem OCP 4 to 1 Management Port Consolidation Adapter is supported in OCP slot 1. When the adapter is installed, OCP slot 2 is not supported.

  • For optimized efficiency, install the required OCP module as illustrated.

Notes

Note
  1. The chained servers do not necessarily have to be installed in the same rack, and could be connected cross-rack via rack switch. See the illustration for an example.

  2. Do not create any switch loop by connecting more than one ports on the same OCP module to the switch.

An example of connection that should be avoided

  3. Do not create any series connection among servers by connecting one OCP module to another OCP module. Each OCP module for the multiple server configuration must be directly connected to the rack switch.

  4. If Uplink MAC is not selected, the multi-server configuration could still work by connecting the servers as the illustration below. It is recommended to select Uplink MAC for optimized efficiency.
