Remove the GPU shuttle

Follow instructions in this section to remove the GPU shuttle. The procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.
  • Power off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the server.
  • Two people and one lifting device on site that can support up to 400 lb (181 kg) are required to perform this procedure. If you do not already have a lifting device available, Lenovo offers the Genie Lift GL-8 material lift that can be purchased at Data Center Solution Configurator. Make sure to include the Foot-release brake and the Load Platform when ordering the Genie Lift GL-8 material lift.
Note
Make sure you have a torque screwdriver available to properly replace the component.

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for this task.
    1. Pull the system shuttle out of the chassis, and place it onto the lift platform. See Remove the system shuttle.
    2. Remove the rear fan bulkhead. See Remove the rear fan bulkhead.
  2. Disengage the retimer board shuttle from the GPU shuttle.
    1. Press the two blue release latches.
    2. Rotate the two release levers until they are perpendicular to the shuttle.
    3. Slightly slide the shuttle out until it stops to disengage it from the GPU shuttle.

  4. Remove the GPU shuttle.
    1. Grasp the bracket (1) at the rear of the GPU shuttle and slide the shuttle back partway.
    2. Extend the two handles (2) on both sides of the GPU baseboard.
    3. Hold the two handles (2) and remove the GPU shuttle out of the system shuttle.
    Note
    • DO NOT lift the GPU shuttle by the OSFP support tray.
    • Make sure two people stand on either side of the GPU shuttle, and remove it by holding the two handles on the GPU baseboard.

  5. To replace only the GPU power cable(s):
    • Removing the GPU power cable:
      1. Remove the two screws and the two washers from the OSFP support tray.
      2. Remove the cable.

    • Installing the GPU power cable:

      1. Align the cable with the hole on the OSFP support tray, and insert it.
      2. Fasten the two washers and the two screws to secure the cable.
        Note
Tighten the screws with a torque screwdriver set to the proper torque. For reference, the torque required for the screws to be fully tighten is 0.9 ± 0.2 newton-meters.

      3. Connect the cable to the GPU baseboard.
  6. To replace only the OSFP card sideband cable(s):
    • Removing the OSFP card sideband cable:

      1. Disconnect the Y-cable from both the GPU baseboard and the OSFP card.
      2. Lift and pull back the cable to remove it from the OSFP support tray.
