Install a full-length GPU adapter

Use this information to install a full-length GPU adapter.

About this task

S002
disconnect all power
CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
Attention
  • Read Installation guidelines to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and disconnect all power cords for this task.

  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.

Note
  • Depending on the specific type, your full-length GPU adapter might look different from the illustration in this topic.

  • Use any documentation that comes with the full-length GPU adapter and follow those instructions in addition to the instructions in this topic.

Procedure

  1. Locate the applicable PCIe slot. See Specifications to identify the different types of PCIe slots in your server.
    Note

Ensure that you observe the installation rules and sequence in Technical rules for PCIe slots.

  2. Make sure you have installed a PCIe adapter holder corresponding to the PCIe slot for your full-length GPU adapter. See Install a PCIe adapter holder.
  3. If you have installed one double-wide GPU adapter in PCIe slot 1, or three double-wide GPU adapters in PCIe slot 1, 3, and 7; make sure you have installed a GPU filler for proper cooling and airflow. See Install a GPU filler.
  4. If necessary, route the power cable for the full-length GPU adapter.
    1. Remove all the fans. See Remove a hot-swap fan.
    2. Remove the fan cage. See Remove the fan cage assembly.
    3. Connect the power cable to the power distribution board; then, route the power cable and secure it under the clip. See GPU cable routing.
    4. Reinstall the fan cage. See Install the fan cage assembly.
    5. Reinstall all the fans. See Install a hot-swap fan.
  5. If a bracket is installed in the PCIe slot, remove it. Store the bracket for the PCIe slot in case that you later remove the PCIe adapter and need the bracket to cover the place.
  6. Install the full-length GPU adapter.
Figure 1. Full-length GPU adapter installation

    Note
Make sure the PCIe adapter retainer is in the opened position.
    1. Connect the power cable to the full-length GPU adapter.
    2. Align the full-length GPU adapter to the PCIe adapter holder and the PCIe slot; then, gently press both ends of the full-length GPU adapter until it is securely seated in the PCIe slot.
    3. Fasten the screw to secure the GPU adapter.
    4. Close the PCIe adapter retainer.

After you finish

  1. If you have installed one double-wide GPU adapter in PCIe slot 1, or three double-wide GPU adapters in PCIe slot 1, 3, and 7; install a GPU filler. See Install a GPU filler.

  2. Reinstall the air baffle. See Install the air baffle.

  3. Reinstall all the flash power modules. See Install a flash power module.

  4. Reinstall the server cover. See Install the server cover.

  5. Complete the parts replacement. See Complete the parts replacement.
