Installing a ServeRAID M5215 controller

Use this information to install a ServeRAID M5215 controller.

ServeRAID M5215 controller has an LSI 3108 SAS controller that supports RAID levels 0 and 1 when installed in a Lenovo Flex System x240 M5 compute node. When an optional ServeRAID M5215 controller is installed in the compute node, it overrides the hard disk drive controller that is on the compute node system board.

Before you install the ServeRAID M5215 controller, complete the following steps:

  1. Read Safety and Installation guidelines.
  2. If the compute node is installed in an Lenovo Flex System chassis, remove it (see Removing a compute node from a chassis for instructions).
  3. Carefully lay the compute node on a flat, static-protective surface, orienting the compute node with the bezel pointing toward you.

To install the ServeRAID M5215 controller, complete the following steps.

Note

  1. Remove the cover (see Removing the compute node cover).
  2. If a hard disk drive backplane is installed in the compute note that is not compatible with the ServeRAID M5215 controller, remove it (see Removing a hard disk drive backplane).
    Note
All hard disk drive backplanes use the same connector on the system board; however, there are two alignment slots in the hard disk drive cage to accommodate different backplane types. Make sure that you align the backplane and system board connectors when inserting the backplane in the hard disk drive cage.
  3. If you are installing both the ServeRAID M5215 controller and hard disk drive backplane, install the ServeRAID M5215 hard disk drive backplane in the system-board assembly (see Installing a hard disk drive backplane). The ServeRAID M5215 controller hard disk drive backplane goes in the rear alignment slots on the hard disk drive cage.

  4. Touch the static-protective package that contains the ServeRAID controller to an unpainted metal surface on any grounded rack component; then, remove the controller from the package.
    Note
Make sure that the flash power module is installed in the ServeRAID controller before installing the controller in the compute node (see "ServeRAID M5215 with 2GB Flash Enablement - Lenovo Flex System x240 M5 Installation Guide" for information and instructions.
  5. Locate the ServeRAID controller connector on the hard disk drive backplane.
  6. Orient the connector on the ServeRAID controller with the connector on the hard disk drive backplane; then, press the controller into the connector.

  7. Firmly press on the indicated locations to seat the ServeRAID controller.
    Note
Install storage drives in the same bay locations as from which they were removed.
  8. Install any removed storage drives and hard disk drive bay fillers (see Installing a hot-swap hard disk drive).
  9. Import your RAID configuration to the replacement ServeRAID adapter as a foreign configuration. See ServeRAID-M Software User's Guide for instructions.
After you install the ServeRAID M5215 controller, complete the following steps:
  1. Install the cover on the compute node (see Installing the compute node cover for instructions).
  2. Install the compute node into the chassis (see Installing a compute node in a chassis for instructions).
  3. Configure the RAID array using the LSI Logic Configuration Utility program (see Using the LSI Logic Configuration Utility).
