Remove an NVLink switch tray from the rack

Follow instructions in this section to remove an NVLink switch tray from the rack. The procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

CAUTION

Use safe practices when lifting.

Attention

Do not leave multiple trays open at the same time, as it may increase the risk of over-tilting or instability.

Attention

• Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.
• Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
• Power off the NVLink switch tray and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the rack solution.

Note

Ensure the following tools are available to perform the replacement.

• Customer / Self-maintainer responsibility:
  • Two 5L containers (one labeled with “Fresh” and one labeled with Waste") with integrated hose mounts
  • Approved coolant: PG25, NALCO® TCS101, or HPCCL2000 (Deionized water premixed with a compatible antimicrobial agent)
  • Air compressor
    • Vendor: e.g., Milwaukee
    • Max Pressure: 150 PSI +/- 1 PSI
    • Airflow: 1.4 CFM at 0 PSI
    • Hose: 36” with brass chuck
  • Cordless transfer pump
    • Vendor: e.g., Milwaukee
    • Flow rate: 480 GPH
    • Connections: ¾” Brass (standard garden hose connection)
    • Lift/Head: 18’ max suction lift
  • Lift tool (Genie Lift GL-8 material lift or ServerLIFT SL-350X)
  • Nitrogen cylinder (Airgas-NI 80A-Industrial grade Nitrogen, size 80 high pressure aluminum cylinder, CGA 580)
  • Nitrogen regulator (Airgas HCL3001036 – Harris® Model 425-50PSI-CGA580 Heavy-Duty Single-Stage Industrial Regulator for Argon, Helium, and Nitrogen)
  • NVLink connector covers
  • Quick connector caps
  • Spill kit
• Lenovo Service / Self-maintainer responsibility:
  • Liquid cooling service kit includes below:
    • Air input kit: Connects the air compressor to the tray
    • Coolant drain kit: Connects the tray to the drainage / coolant container
    • Coolant fill kit: Connects the pump to the tray
    • Coolant source kit: Connects the coolant container to the pump
    • Nitrogen release kit with gauge: Connects the tray to the drainage container
    • Nitrogen supply kit: Connects the tray to the nitrogen cylinder regulator
  • Personal protective equipment (protective glasses and gloves)
  • Phillips #2 bit
  • Torque screwdriver

Procedure

1. Slide out the NVLink switch tray.
   1. Open the handles on both sides of the tray.
   2. Hold the handles and slide the tray out until it stops.

2. Press the white latches on both sides of the rail to remove the NVLink switch tray completely from the rack. Then, place the tray on the lift tool.

3. After tray removal, install the four NVLink connector covers and two quick connector caps onto the rear of the tray.

4. Remove the inner rail from the NVLink switch tray.
   1. Loosen the screw that secure the inner rail.
   2. Slightly pull the latch upward to disengage the inner rail from the mounting pins on the tray.
   3. Remove the inner rail from the tray.
   4. Repeat the same steps above to remove the other inner rail.

5. Remove both quick connector caps from the NVLink switch tray.
6. Drain the coolant from the NVLink switch tray.
   1. Ensure the ball valve on the coolant drain kit is closed. Then, attach the kit to the left quick connector on the rear of the tray.
   2. Place the exhaust end of the coolant drain kit into the drainage container.
   3. Gradually open the ball valve on the coolant drain kit to bleed off any internal pressure; liquid will begin to flow into the container.
   4. Attach the air input kit to the right quick connector on the rear of the tray.
   5. Connect the opposite end of air input kit to the air compressor.

   6. Set the air compressor to 25 PSI and activate it. Maintain this for approximately five minutes.
   7. Once the coolant stream stops, power off the compressor, close the ball valve, and disconnect the hoses from the tray. Immediately proceed the next step to fill the tray with nitrogen.
7. Move the NVLink switch tray to the Nitrogen station for filling.
   1. Ensure the nitrogen cylinder regulator is closed; then, connect the nitrogen supply kit end with the adapter to the regulator.
   2. Remove the right quick connector cap and attach the opposite end of the nitrogen supply kit.
   3. Ensure the ball valve on the nitrogen release kit is closed; then, remove the left quick connect cap and attach the kit.
   4. Open the nitrogen release kit valve, then open the regulator to purge the tray for at least five seconds.
   5. Open the regulator to purge the tray for at least five seconds. Then, close the nitrogen release kit valve.

   6. Adjust the regulator to 25 PSI, and verify that the release kit pressure gauge reads 25 PSI.
   7. Attach the tag to the tray and record the required details:
      • Date and time
      • Technician name
      • Pressure reading
      • Coolant type (including manufacture and model number)
   8. Close the regulator and remove both kits from the tray and reinstall the connector caps.
