Thin volume – allocated capacity limit threshold exceeded

Important
  • If you do not resolve this problem, this is the last alert you will receive before the thin volume's allocated capacity limit is reached.

  • If the thin volume's allocated capacity limit is reached, it will not have enough capacity to save new data. Therefore, the thin volume will fail write requests until you fix the problem.

  • To resolve this problem, you can either increase the thin volume's allocated capacity limit, increase the threshold capacity alert level, or disable the threshold capacity alert. Note that increasing the alert threshold will reduce the time you have to respond the next time you receive a threshold exceeded notification.

Recovery Steps

  1. Is the written capacity being reported by the host's operating system significantly less than the written capacity reported in the ThinkSystem System Manager?

    • If yes, issue a SCSI UNMAP command from the host to reclaim the excess capacity from the thin volume's repository. If this problem persists after the Thin Capacity Reclamation operation has completed, go to step 2.

    • If no, go to step 2.

  2. Is the volume's reported capacity currently larger than the volume's allocated capacity limit?

    • If yes, go to step 3.

    • If no, go to step 4.

  3. Do you want to increase the thin volume's allocated capacity limit, increase its alert threshold, or disable its alert threshold?

    • If you want to increase the allocated capacity limit, go to step 5.

    • If you want to increase the alert threshold, go to step 7.

    • If you want to disable the alert threshold, go to step 8.

  4. Do you want to increase the thin volume's reported capacity, increase its alert threshold, or disable its alert threshold?

    • If you want to increase the reported capacity, go to step 6.

    • If you want to increase the alert threshold, go to step 7.

    • If you want to disable the alert threshold, go to step 8.

  5. Increase the allocated capacity limit, and then go to step 9.

    1. Go to Storage > Volumes. Then, select the Thin Volume Monitoring tab.

    2. Highlight the affected thin volume shown in the Details area.

    3. Select Change Limit and increase the allocated capacity limit.

    4. Go to step 9.

  6. Increase the reported capacity, and then go to step 9.

    1. Go to Storage > Volumes. Then, select the All Volumes tab.

    2. Highlight the affected thin volume shown in the Details area.

    3. Select Increase Capacity and increase the reported capacity.

    4. Go to step 9.

  7. Increase the alert threshold, and then go to step 9.

    1. Go to Storage > Volumes. Then, select the Thin Volume Monitoring tab.

    2. Highlight the affected thin volume shown in the Details area.

    3. Select Change Limit and adjust the alert threshold to a value higher than its current setting.

    4. Go to step 9.

  8. Disable the alert threshold.

    1. Go to Storage > Volumes. Then, select the Thin Volume Monitoring tab.

    2. Highlight the affected thin volume shown in the Details area.

    3. Select Change Limit and unselect Alert me when....

  9. Select Recheck to ensure the problem has been resolved.
