Glossary

A

access control list (ACL): A union of users and resources. ACLs are used to determine which resources (devices and resource managers) a user is allowed to access. When a user has access to a specific set of resources, the user can see data (such as inventory, events, alerts, and analytics) that is related to only those resources.

activation key: A file in .key format that is installed to activate a license.

alert: A hardware condition or an Orchestrator condition that requires investigation and user intervention.

audit event: A record of user activities that were performed from a resource manager or Lenovo SDI Management Platform.

authentication server: A user registry that is used to authenticate user credentials.

authorization code: A 22-character code that is used to generate an activation key to activate a license.

B

baseboard management controller (BMC): A generic term for a service processor in a server that combines systems-management functions, video adapter, remote presence, and blue-screen capture features in a single chip.

C

component: A part of a platform (such as XClarity Controller or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), on which firmware or software can be applied.

Configuration Pattern: A set of common configuration settings, including management controller and UEFI firmware settings, that you can use to quickly configure multiple servers at one time.

configured credentials: A client name and password used to bind Lenovo SDI Management Platform to an external authentication server. If the binding fails, the authentication process will also fail.

connection: An authenticated and authorized session with an external resource manager, such as Lenovo XClarity Administrator or a third-party service.

D.

dashboard: The hub of Lenovo SDI Management Platform, summarizing the status of resources and activities in your environment.

device: See physical devices and virtualized devices.

DIMM: A physical device that is seen by the operating system and application as persistent memory (for example, PMEM, PMEMDISK, /dev/pmem0).

Download: The process of transferring data from the web to Lenovo SDI Management Platform. dynamic group: A set of resources (such as all servers of a certain type) based on specific rules (such as a set of inventory attributes).

E.

event: See resource events and audit events.

event filter: Rules that define the scope of events that are forwarded to an external application using an event forwarder.

event forwarder: A function (such as syslog, email, or REST web service) that forwards events to an external application.

external service certificate: A certificate that Lenovo SDI Management Platform uses to verify that it can trust a server for only specific external services.

export: The process of transferring data from Lenovo SDI Management Platform to a host system.

G

group: A group of resources. See also static groups and dynamic groups.

I

Import: The process of transferring files or data from a host system to Lenovo SDI Management Platform.

J

Job: A long-running task that is performed asynchronously against one or more resources.

L

license: Entitlement for service and support, and enablement of all Orchestrator functions for a specific number of devices.

managed resource: A device or resource manager managed by Lenovo SDI Management Platform.

management software: Lenovo XClarity Administrator.

N

NVDIMM: A physical device that is seen by the operating system and application as persistent memory (for example, PMEM, PMEMDISK, /dev/pmem0).

O

Orchestrator server: Lenovo SDI Management Platform.

P

physical device: Hardware such as a chassis, a server, a switch, and a storage.

platform: A specific type of device (such as Lenovo ThinkSystem SD530 server) or resource manager (such as Lenovo XClarity Administrator).

R

repository: A container of preloaded, custom, and imported files (such as Orchestrator server updates, firmware updates, and Configuration Patterns).

resource: A resource manager, a device, an infrastructure resource, or an Orchestrator server.

resource event: A hardware condition or an Orchestrator condition that occurs on a managed device, resource manager, or Lenovo SDI Management Platform.

resource group: A group of devices or resource managers that can be viewed and acted upon collectively.

resource manager: A software application that manages one or more devices and monitors activities on those devices.

role: A set of actions (permissions) that a user is allowed to perform.

S

save: The process of transferring files from Lenovo SDI Management Platform to a host system.

server certificate: A self-signed server certificate of Lenovo SDI Management Platform.

service data: A collection of diagnostic data, inventory, and logs for a specific resource.

service ticket: A record that is opened with a service provider (such as Lenovo Support Center) to assist with problem resolution.

static group: A group of specific resources.

T

trusted certificate: A certificate that Lenovo SDI Management Platform uses to verify that it can trust a resource when acting as a client to establish a secure connection to another resource.

U

UEFI: A specification that details the interface between the operating system and the platform firmware at boot time. It is not specific to any processor architecture.

update package: A bundle of one or more firmware updates for a specific platform.

update compliance policy: A set of rules that determine whether certain software or firmware installed on a specific resource is at a required level.

upload: The process of transferring data from Lenovo SDI Management Platform to the Web.

user: A username/password pair used to control access to the product. All users must be assigned to a user group. Each user group is associated with a role, which indicates a set of operations that the user group is authorized to perform.

V

virtual appliance: Lenovo SDI Management Platform server and virtual appliance, such as ESXi.

virtual device: A logical representation of a physical device that is managed by a hypervisor.
