Integrated upgrade

Lenovo SDI Management Platform is integrated with VMware vSphere Lifecycle Manager to centralize and simplify the lifecycle management of VMware ESXi hosts. Lenovo SDI Management Platform allows you to create unified cluster images and perform rolling upgrades to update all hosts in a cluster in batches without interrupting services. Through rolling upgrades, the hosts in the cluster can use the same hardware and software configurations. You can use a cluster image to do the following:

  • Update and upgrade the ESXi version on all hosts in a cluster
  • Install and update third-party drivers and software on all ESXi hosts in a cluster
  • Update the firmware of all ESXi hosts in a cluster

Before you begin

Ensure that Lenovo XClarity Integrator for VMware vCenter has been installed, and that Lenovo XClarity Integrator has been enabled as the hardware support manager for vSphere Lifecycle Manager. See Installing Lenovo XClarity Integrator for VMware vCenter.

Procedure

To perform an integrated upgrade, complete the following steps:

  1. Importing basic ESXi and Lenovo plug-ins Import the ESXi and Lenovo drivers to be used on the vSphere client.

  2. Managing firmware packages Manage ESXi host firmware packages to be used on the vSphere client.

  3. Creating a cluster image Create a cluster image (including ESXi, Lenovo drivers, and firmware) on Lenovo SDI Management Platform and apply it to all hosts in a cluster. For more information about image configurations, see ThinkAgile VX - Best Recipes.

  4. Checking cluster compliance Check the compliance of hosts in a cluster on Lenovo SDI Management Platform.

  5. Fixing non-compliant hosts Fix non-compliant ESXi hosts in a cluster on Lenovo SDI Management Platform.
