Riser cards

Use this section to understand the cable routing for riser cards.

The server supports up to three riser cards: riser card 1, riser card 2, and riser card 3. Riser card 1 or 2 is installed directly on the system board, while riser card 3 needs to be connected to system board.
Note

When there is only one processor installed, six system fans are needed if a middle drive cage, rear drive cage, or riser 3 is installed.

Riser card 3 power and sideband connection

The power and sideband connections for x8/x8 PCIe riser card 3 and x16/x16 PCIe riser card 3 are the same.

Riser card 3 (x8/x8 PCIe) signal cable connection for one processor

The following illustration shows the signal cable connections for the x8/x8 PCIe riser card 3 when only one processor is installed.

Note
The below option kits are needed when you want to add the x8/x8 PCIe riser card 3 if your server comes with only one processor and no riser 3:

Riser card 3 (x8/x8 PCIe) signal cable connection for two processors

Note
  • The below option kit is needed when you want to add the x8/x8 PCIe riser card 3 if your server comes with two processors and no riser 3:

  • The below option kit is needed when you want to add a second processor if your server comes with one processor and the x8/x8 PCIe riser card 3:

Riser card 3 (x16/x16 PCIe) signal cable connection for one processor

The following illustration shows the signal cable connections for the x16/x16 PCIe riser card 3 when only one processor is installed.

Note
The below option kit is needed when you want to add the x16/x16 PCIe riser card 3 if your server comes with only one processor and no riser 3. In this scenario, only PCIe slot 7 is available.
