Remove the Lenovo Neptune(TM) liquid-to-air (L2A) hybrid cooling module

Follow instructions in this section to remove the Lenovo NeptuneTM liquid-to-air (L2A) hybrid cooling module.

About this task

Important

Removing and installing this component requires trained technicians. Do not attempt to remove or install it without proper training.

Attention
Prepare the following screwdrivers to ensure you can install and remove the corresponding screws properly.
Torque screwdriver type listScrew Type
Phillips #1 head screwdriverPhillips #1
Torx T10 head screwdriverTorx T10 screw
Note
Make sure you have an alcohol cleaning pad available.
CAUTION
Do not touch the radiator fins. Touching the radiator fins might damage the L2A.

Procedure

  1. Prepare your server.
    1. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    2. Remove the 2.5-inch drive assembly. See Remove the 2.5-inch drive cage assembly.
    3. Remove the network adapters. See Remove a network adapter.
    4. Remove the front I/O expansion board module. See Remove the front I/O expansion board module.
  2. Remove the retimer assembly. See Remove the retimer assembly.
  3. Route the cold plate assembly pump cables through the cable clips on the cold plate assembly.

  5. Remove the GPU-L2A assembly.
    1. Rotate up the clips and handle on the SXM GPU board.
    2. Hold the handles on both sides of the SXM GPU board, and lift the GPU-L2A assembly out of the chassis.

  7. With a Torx 10 screwdriver, unfasten the captive screws that secure the cold plates to the SXM GPU board in the removal sequence shown on the cold plate label. Remove the screws with a torque screwdriver set to the proper torque. For reference, the torque required for the screws to fully tighten is 0.4±0.06 newton-meter, 3.5±0.5 pound-inch.
    Attention
To prevent damage to components, make sure to follow the indicated screw unfastening sequence shown on the cold plate label.

  8. Hold the radiator by its upper edge and hold the cold plate assembly by its lifting handle; then, lift them up from the SXM GPU board.
    Note
A flat tool may be needed to carefully disengage the cold plates from the GPUs. Make sure not to damage the GPUs while disengaging the cold plates.

  9. Rotate the L2A counterclockwise.
    1. Hold the right end of the radiator which is attached with the tubes, and hold the cold plate assembly lifting handle.
    2. Rotate the L2A counterclockwise so that the left end of the radiator is standing on a flat surface, and the cold plate assembly lifting handle is facing your left side.

  10. Turn the L2A upside down.
    1. Keep the left end of the radiator standing on the flat surface, and hold the cold plate assembly lifting handle.
    2. Move your hand to hold the bottom edge of the radiator, then turn the L2A upside down so that the upper side of the radiator and cold plate assembly lifting handle are facing down.
Figure 9. Turning the L2A upside down
      Turning the L2A upside down
  11. Place the L2A on a clean flat surface.
  12. If there is any old thermal grease on the four GPUs, gently clean the top of the four GPUs with an alcohol cleaning pad.
After you finish
  1. Install a replacement unit or proceed to replace the SXM GPU board. See:

  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
