Remove a power shelf from the rack

Follow instructions in this section to remove a power shelf from the rack. The procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

Disconnect power
CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
CAUTION
Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. To avoid a shock hazard:
  • Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet/source.
  • Connect any equipment that will be attached to this product to properly wired outlets/sources.
  • When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
  • Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage.
  • The device might have more than one power cord, to remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

Do not leave multiple power shelves open at the same time, as it may increase the risk of over-tilting or instability.

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.
  • Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
  • Power off the power shelf and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the rack solution.
Note
Ensure a lift tool is available to perform the replacement.

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for this task.
    1. Disconnect all power sources to avoid electric shock.
      1. Press and hold the latches on both sides of the power whip.
      2. Pull out the power whip.
      Note
      Removing the power whip may require two people to ensure sufficient force is applied for a proper disconnection.

    2. Remove all the power supply units. See Remove a hot-swap power supply unit from a power shelf.
    3. Remove the PMC module. See Remove a a hot-swap PMC module from a power shelf.
  2. Remove the power shelf.
    1. Unfasten the two screws on the front.
    2. Slide the power shelf out of the rack.
