Install a memory module

Follow instructions in this section to install a memory module.

About this task

S002
disconnect all power
CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
See Memory module installation rules and order for detailed information about memory configuration and setup.
Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the server.

  • If the node is installed in an enclosure or mounted, remove the node from the enclosure or mount. See Configuration guide.

  • Make sure to adopt one of the supported configurations listed in Memory module installation rules and order.

  • Memory modules are sensitive to static discharge and require special handling. Refer to the standard guidelines at Handling static-sensitive devices:
    • Always wear an electrostatic-discharge strap when removing or installing memory modules. Electrostatic-discharge gloves can also be used.

    • Never hold two or more memory modules together so that they do not touch each other. Do not stack memory modules directly on top of each other during storage.

    • Never touch the gold memory module connector contacts or allow these contacts to touch the outside of the memory module connector housing.

    • Handle memory modules with care: never bend, twist, or drop a memory module.

    • Do not use any metal tools (such as jigs or clamps) to handle the memory modules, because the rigid metals may damage the memory modules.

    • Do not insert memory modules while holding packages or passive components, which can cause package cracks or detachment of passive components by the high insertion force.

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for this task.
    1. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    2. Remove the PMB air baffle. See Remove the PMB air baffle.
    3. Lift the riser assembly from the node. See Remove the riser assembly from the node.
    4. Remove the processor air baffle. See Remove the processor air baffle and air flow sensor board.
  2. Touch the static-protective package that contains the memory module to any unpainted surface on the outside of the server. Then, take the memory module out of the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
  3. Locate the required memory module slot on the system board.
    Note

Ensure that you observe the installation rules and sequence order in Memory module installation rules and order.

  4. Open the retaining clip with a memory module tool.
    Attention
    • Due to space constraints, use a memory module tool to open the retaining clips. Do not use pencils or other fragile tools. When you received your server, the memory module tool is in the material box.
    • To avoid breaking the retaining clips or damaging the memory module slots, handle the clips gently.
    1. Place the tip of the tool in the recess on the top of the retaining clip.
    2. Carefully rotate the retaining clip away from the memory module slot.

  5. Install the memory module.
    1. Align the memory module with the slot.
    2. Firmly press both ends of the memory module straight down until the retaining clip snaps into the locked position.

    Attention

Be careful when installing a memory module to DIMM slot 1. DO NOT let the memory module touch nearby components. Touching nearby components might cause damage to the memory module.

    Note

If there is a gap between the memory module and the retaining clip, the memory module has not been correctly inserted. In this case, open the retaining clip, remove the memory module, and then reinsert it.
