Remove the processor

Use this information to remove the processor. This procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

About this task

To avoid potential danger, read and follow the following safety statements.

CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the server.

  • If the server is installed in a rack, remove the server from the rack.

  • Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    2. Remove the air baffle. See Remove the air baffle.
    3. Remove the heat sink. See Remove the heat sink.
  2. Remove the processor.
    1. Gently pull the handle away from the processor retainer.
    2. Lift the handle.
    3. Lift the processor retainer to the fully open position as illustrated.
    4. Hold the processor by both sides and gently lift it away from the processor socket.
    Note
    1. Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the processor.

    2. Keep the processor socket clean from any object to prevent possible damages.

After you finish

  1. Install a new processor. See Install the processor.

  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
