Remove a PCIe riser
Follow instructions in this section to remove a PCIe riser.
About this task
Attention
- Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.
- Power off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the server.
- If the server is installed in a rack, slide the server out on its rack slide rails to gain access to the top cover, or remove the server from the rack. See Remove the server from rack.
Note
- To maintain proper system cooling, do not operate the server without a PCIe riser or a riser filler installed in the chassis.
- The PCIe riser might look different from the illustration.
Select the PCIe riser removal scenario
There are three PCIe riser removal scenarios differentiated by PCIe riser location and serial port installation. See corresponding instructions below for proper removal procedure.
Figure 1. PCIe riser locations
Remove a PCIe riser without serial port module
Procedure
- Make preparation for this task.
- Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
- Disconnect the cable(s) from the PCIe riser.
- Remove the PCIe riser.
After you finish
- If no PCIe riser is going to be installed to the chassis, install a riser filler into the chassis. See Install a PCIe riser.
- To replace the rear PCIe adapter, see Remove a rear PCIe adapter.
- If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
- If you plan to recycle the component:
- Remove the rear PCIe adapter(s), see Remove a rear PCIe adapter.
- Unfasten the screws to remove the PCIe riser card from the PCIe riser cage.NoteDepending on the configuration, unfasten four or five screws on the PCIe riser card.

- Disconnect the cable(s) from the PCIe riser.
- If the PCIe riser 2 is installed, remove it from the chassis. See Remove a PCIe riser without serial port module.
- Remove the PCIe riser 1 installed with serial port module.
After you finish
- If no PCIe riser is going to be installed to the chassis, install a riser filler into the chassis. See Install a PCIe riser.
