Install a PCIe switch board heat sink

Follow instructions in this section to install a PCIe switch board heat sink. The procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.
  • Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
Note
Make sure you have the required tools listed below available to properly replace the component:
  • One torque screwdriver
  • Two pieces of thermal grease

Procedure

  1. Apply a blob of new thermal grease (0.3 ml) onto the center of the heat spreader.
    Figure 1. Thermal grease application

  2. Install the PCIe switch board heat sink.
    1. Align the heat sink with the four screw holes on the PCIe switch board; then, gently place the heat sink onto the PCIe switch board.
    2. Follow the screw sequence specified on the heat-sink label, and turn the four screws clockwise a few turns until the screw threads engage in the PCIe switch board.
    3. Follow the screw sequence specified on the heat-sink label, and fully tighten the four screws to secure the heat sink.
    Note
Loosen or tighten the screws with a torque screwdriver set to the proper torque. For reference, the torque required for the screws to be fully loosen or tighten is 0.9 newton-meters, 8 inch-pounds.

  3. If necessary, reinstall the following components.
    1. Reinstall the M.2 drive cage. See Install the M.2 drive cage and backplane
    2. Reinstall all the hot-swap M.2 drive assemblies. See Install a hot-swap M.2 drive assembly
    3. Reinstall the integrated diagnostics panel cage.
      1. Insert the cage into its slot at the front of the NVMe drive and PCIe switch board cage.
      2. Tighten the six screws to secure the cage.
      Note
Follow below torque values to tighten the screws with a torque screwdriver set to the proper torque.
      • Two side screws (M3 × 4 mm): 0.9 ± 0.2 newton-meters
      • Four front screws (M3 × 5 mm): 0.5 ± 0.05 newton-meters

  4. If necessary, reinstall the following components.
    1. Reinstall the system I/O tray.
      1. Lower the tray and slide it forward to engage it with the NVMe drive and PCIe switch board cage.
      2. Tighten the ten screws to secure the tray.
        Note
Follow below torque values to tighten the screws with a torque screwdriver set to the proper torque.
        • Four side and top screws (M3 × 4 mm): 0.9 ± 0.2 newton-meters
        • Six front screws (M3 × 5 mm): 0.5 ± 0.05 newton-meters

    2. Reinstall the OCP module. See Install the OCP module.

After you finish

  1. Reinstall the NVMe drive and PCIe switch board cage. See Install the NVMe drive and PCIe switch board cage.
  2. Reinstall the front fan cage. See Install the front fan cage.
  3. Push the system shuttle fully into the chassis.
    1. Lift the two lock latches on both sides of the shuttle.
    2. Slide the shuttle into the chassis.
    3. Push the shuttle fully into the chassis.
    4. Rotate the two release levers until they lock into place.
