Remove a PCIe switch board heat sink

Follow instructions in this section to remove a PCIe switch board heat sink. The procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

About this task

Attention
Note
Make sure you have the required tools listed below available to properly replace the component:
  • Torque screwdriver
  • Alcohol cleaning pad

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for this task.
    1. Pull the system shuttle to the stop position.
      1. Press the two blue release latches.
      2. Rotate the two release levers until they are perpendicular to the shuttle.
      3. Pull the shuttle forward until it stops.

    2. Remove the front fan cage. See Remove the front fan cage.
    3. Remove the NVMe drive and PCIe switch board cage. See Remove the NVMe drive and PCIe switch board cage.
  2. To remove only the right PCIe switch board heat sink (when looking at the system shuttle from the front), remove the following components:
    1. Remove the integrated diagnostics panel cage.
      1. Loosen the six screws securing the cage.
      2. Slide the cage backward and remove it.

    2. Remove all the hot-swap M.2 drive assemblies. See Remove a hot-swap M.2 drive assembly.
    3. Remove the M.2 drive cage. See Remove the M.2 drive cage and backplane.
  3. To remove only the left PCIe switch board heat sink (when looking at the system shuttle from the front), remove the following components:
    1. Remove the OCP module. See Remove the OCP module.
    2. Remove the system I/O tray.
      1. Loosen the ten screws securing the tray.
      2. Slide the tray backward, and lift it out of the NVMe drive and PCIe switch board cage.

  4. Remove the PCIe switch board heat sink.
    1. Fully loosen all the screws on the heat sink in the diagonal pattern.
    2. Carefully lift the heat sink from the PCIe switch board.
      Note
Loosen or tighten the screws with a torque screwdriver set to the proper torque. For reference, the torque required for the screws to be fully loosen or tighten is 0.9 newton-meters, 8 inch-pounds.

  5. With an alcohol cleaning pad, wipe off any thermal grease from the following components:
    • Heat spreader on the PCIe switch board
    • Bottom of the PCIe switch board heat sink

After you finish

  1. If you are replacing a PCIe switch board heat sink, install a new one. See Install a PCIe switch board heat sink.
  2. If you are replacing the PCIe switch board, remove it. See Remove the PCIe switch board.
  3. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
