Remove a fan module

Follow instructions in this section to remove a fan module.

disconnect all power
CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

To avoid personal injury, disconnect the fan cables before removing the fan from the device.

Hazardous energy present. Voltages with hazardous energy might cause heating when shorted with metal, which might result in spattered metal, burns, or both.

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for this task.
    1. If necessary, remove all the WLAN antennas. See Remove the WLAN antennas.
    2. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    3. Remove the PMB air baffle. See Remove the PMB air baffle.
    4. Lift the riser assembly from the node. See Remove the riser assembly from the node.
    5. Remove the processor air baffle. See Remove the processor air baffle and air flow sensor board.
  2. Disconnect the fan cable.
    1. Press and hold the fan cable latch.
    2. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board.
  3. Loosen the four captive screws that secure the fan module with a PH1 screwdriver.

  4. Pinch the blue touch points; then, lift the fan module to remove it.

    Attention


    DO NOT disassemble the fan module. Attempting to disassemble the fan module might cause damage to the components.

After this task is completed

  • Install a replacement unit. See Install a fan module.
  • If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
