Remove the processor and memory expansion tray

Follow instructions in this section to remove the processor and memory expansion tray.

About this task

Attention
  • Go over Installation Guidelines to ensure that you work safely.

  • Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables (see Power off the server).

  • If the server is installed in a rack, slide the server out on its rack slide rails to gain access to the top cover, or remove the server from the rack.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. Remove the top cover (see Remove the top cover).
    2. Remove both PCIe riser cages or fillers, the chassis air baffle, and the PCIe expansion tray (see Remove a 4U PCIe riser cage, Remove the chassis air baffle, and Remove the 4U PCIe expansion tray).
    3. Remove the fan cage assembly (see Remove the fan cage assembly).
    4. If you are replacing the processor and memory expansion tray, remove the memory modules (see Remove a memory module), and PHMs (see Remove a processor and heat sink) from the expansion tray.
      Important
To avoid component damage, DO NOT remove or install memory modules or PHMs when the tray is removed from the server.
  2. Disengage the processor and memory expansion tray.
Figure 1. Disengaging the processor and memory expansion tray

    • Grasp and pull the captive screw up; then, push it forward to disengage the handle.
    • Rotate the handle all the way up until it is in the vertical position.
  3. If the two PCIe cables are connected, disconnect them.
