Volume - hot spare in use

One or more drives have failed, and hot spare drives have automatically taken over for the failed drives.

Important
  • The data on the affected volumes is still accessible.

  • When a hot spare takes over for a failed drive, data from the drive is reconstructed on the hot spare and the hot spare is temporarily added to the volume group or pool. Once the failed drive is replaced, the original drive's data is automatically copied to the replacement drive and the hot spare returns to standby mode. You can replace the failed drive before reconstruction is completed on the hot spare. However, the copy back operation will not occur until after the data has been reconstructed on the hot spare.

  • When replacing a drive, make sure the replacement drive has a capacity equal to or greater than the failed drive you will remove.

  • You can replace a failed drive while the storage array is receiving I/O.

CAUTION
Risk of data loss

If a 'Drive Failure Impending' problem is also being reported, you must fix that problem first. If the drive with the Drive Failure Impending status fails while the hot spare is being reconstructed, the affected volumes will fail and all data will be lost.

CAUTION
Possible loss of data accessibility

Before proceeding, ensure that the “OK to remove” field in the Details area indicates Yes. If No is displayed, it indicates that there is another component that must be serviced first. Always select “Recheck” prior to and after servicing a component to ensure that there aren't any new problems that may affect the component you plan to service.

CAUTION
Electrostatic discharge can damage sensitive components

Always use proper anti-static protection when handling components. Touching components without using a grounding wrist strap may damage the equipment.

Recovery Steps

  1. Remove the drive shown in the Details area. Its fault indicator light should be lit.

  2. Wait at least 30 seconds, and then insert a new drive. Its fault indicator light may be lit for a short time (one minute or less).

Once the the storage array has finished reconstructing the original drive's data to the hot spare drive, the copyback operation will copy the reconstructed data back to the replacement drive.

The reconstruction and copyback operation's progress can be monitored by going to Home and selecting the Show operations in progress link.

  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each failed drive.

  4. Select Recheck to ensure the problem has been resolved.
