Remove a PCIe adapter

Follow instructions in this section to remove a PCIe adapter.

About this task

To avoid potential danger, make sure to read and follow the safety information.

Attention

Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to make sure that you work safely.

Note

Depending on the specific configuration, the hardware might look slightly different from the illustrations in this section.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. Power off the node (see Power off the node); then, disconnect all external cables from the node.
      Note
If necessary, press the release clip with a flat-head screwdriver to remove an external network cable from the rear of a 2U node.

    2. Remove the node from the chassis (see Remove a node from the chassis); then, carefully lay the node on a flat, static-protective surface, orienting the node with the front toward you.
      Note
      • When removing the node, note the node tray number and make sure to install the node in the same tray from which it was removed. Reinstalling the node into a different tray requires the node to be reconfigured.
      • For safety, make sure to hold the node with both hands when lifting the node.
    3. Remove the top cover (see Remove the top cover).
    4. If the GPU air duct is installed in the node, remove it (see Remove the GPU air duct).
    5. If the internal adapter bracket is installed and blocks the way of removing the fan cage, disconnect all the cables from the internal adapter; then, remove the internal adapter bracket from the node (see Remove the internal adapter bracket).
    6. Disconnect all the fan cables from the system board; then, remove the fan cage from the node (see Remove the fan cage).
    7. Remove the PCIe riser assembly from the node and, if necessary, disconnect the PCIe cables from the system board (see Remove the PCIe riser assembly and PCIe riser cable routing).
  2. Remove the PCIe adapter from the PCIe riser cage.
    1. Remove the screw that secures the PCIe adapter to the PCIe riser.
    2. Grasp the PCIe adapter by its edges and carefully pull it out of the PCIe slot.

After this task is completed

  1. Install a replacement unit or filler (see Install a PCIe adapter).
    Note
    • Follow the rules below to install different fillers.
      • No riser cage installed in the node:
        • Install a riser filler (vented).
      • No PCIe adapter installed in the riser:
        • Install a PCIe filler (vented) in each slot.
      • One GPU adapter installed in the riser:
        • Install the GPU adapter in slot 2.
        • Install a GPU PCIe filler (non-vented) in slot 1.
      • One PCIe adapter installed in the riser:
        • Install the PCIe adapter in slot 1.
        • Install a PCIe filler (vented) in slot 2.
  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
