Install a GPU with the GPU thermal kit

Use this information to install a full-height GPU or the NVIDIA P4 GPU with the GPU thermal kit.

Note

• To install a full-height GPU or the NVIDIA P4 GPU, you need to use the GPU thermal kit. The GPU thermal kit contains the following items:

  • The large-size air baffle

  • Two 1U heat sinks

  • Three GPU holders

• To install the other supported low-profile GPUs, refer to Install a PCIe adapter on the riser assembly.

• For information about the form factor of GPUs, refer to GPU specifications. See Specifications.

• Depending on the specific type, your GPU might look different from the illustrations in this topic.

Before installing the GPU thermal kit and a GPU, touch the static-protective package that contains the GPU thermal kit and the GPU to any unpainted surface on the outside of the server. Then, take the components out of the packages and place them on a static-protective surface.

To install a GPU with the GPU thermal kit, complete the following steps:

1. If your server is installed with 2U heat sinks, replace the 2U heat sinks with the 1U heat sinks that came with the GPU thermal kit. For detailed instructions on how to replace the heat sink, see Processor and heat sink replacement.
2. Install the large-size air baffle that came with the GPU thermal kit. For more information about the air baffle, refer to Important information for the air baffle.

3. Depending on the GPU type, do one of the following:

   • For full-height full-length GPUs, if the GPU does not have a bracket installed on it, install the screws to secure the GPU bracket 1 to the GPU. Then, install the GPU holder 2 to the GPU.

   • For NVIDIA P4 GPU, install the P4 GPU air baffle (also called the P4 GPU air duct).

   • For NVIDIA A10 GPU, if you are installing one NVIDIA A10 on the one riser assembly, install a A10 GPU air baffle on the large-size air baffle first.

   • If you are installing two NVIDIA A10 GPUs on one riser assembly, install the FHFL GPU holder on the riser assembly first.

4. Locate the appropriate PCIe slot for the GPU.
   Note

   For server models with one processor, you can install one GPU in PCIe slot 1. For server models with two processors, you can install up to two GPUs in PCIe slot 1 and PCIe slot 5, or up to three GPUs in PCIe slots 1, 5 and 6. For more information, see Specifications.
5. Align the GPU with the PCIe slot on the riser card. Then, carefully press the GPU straight into the slot until it is securely seated. See Install a PCIe adapter on the riser assembly.
6. If a GPU power cable is required, do the following:
   1. Connect one end of the power cable to the GPU power connector on the system board.
   2. Connect the other end of the power cable to the GPU.
   3. Route the GPU power cable properly. See GPU cabling routing.
7. Install the riser assembly with the GPU into the chassis.
8. If you are installing a NVIDIA FHHL V100 GPU, do the following:

   1. One V100 GPU air baffle supports up to two FHHL V100 GPUs installed. If you are installing two FHHL V100 GPUs, remove the middle plate from the V100 GPU air baffle. If you are installing one FHHL V100 GPU, go to the next step.

   2. Install the V100 GPU air baffle.

After installing a GPU with the GPU thermal kit, continue to install other PCIe adapter if necessary. See Install a PCIe adapter on the riser assembly.
