Thermal rules

This topic provides thermal rules for the server.

Air-cooled configuration

  • Configuration with performance fans

    • Supports DW GPU adapters up to 400W.
    • Supports SW GPU adapters up to 150W.
    • Supports RDIMM with capacity up to 128 GB per module.
    • See the following table for ambient temperature management details.

Performance heatsink
  • Keep ambient temperature to 30°C or lower when RDIMM capacity is lower than 64 GB per module.
  • Keep ambient temperature to 25°C or lower when RDIMM capacity is lower than 128 GB per module.
CPU TDP ≤ 300WStandard heatsink
  • Keep ambient temperature to 35°C or lower when the following conditions are met:
    • RDIMM capacity is lower than 64 GB per module.
    • GPU adapters in front riser assemblies are of one of the following type:
      • DW GPU adapters lower than 300W
      • SW GPU adapters lower than 150W
  • Keep ambient temperature to 30°C or lower when RDIMM capacity is lower than 96 GB per module.
  • Keep ambient temperature to 25°C or lower when RDIMM capacity is lower than 128 GB per module.
  • Configuration with ultra fans

    • Supports DW GPU adapters up to 400W.
    • Supports SW GPU adapters up to 150W.
    • Supports RDIMM with capacity up to 256 GB per module.
    • Supports MRDIMM.
    • Supports ThinkSystem NVIDIA BlueField-3 B3220 VPI QSFP112 2P 200G PCIe Gen5 x16 Adapter in the following configuration:
      • CPU TDP ≤ 350W
      • Up to four GPU adapters (GPU adapter ≤ 400W is supported)
      • Slot priority of installing BlueField-3 B3220 Adapter: Slot 4 > 7 > 3 > 6

Performance heatsink
  • Keep ambient temperature to 35°C or lower when RDIMM capacity is lower than 64 GB per module.

  • Keep ambient temperature to 25°C or lower when one of the following components is installed:
    • RDIMM with capacity lower than 256 GB per module
    • MRDIMM
    • ThinkSystem NVIDIA BlueField-3 B3220 VPI QSFP112 2P 200G PCIe Gen5 x16 Adapter

Air-cooled configuration supporting front high watts GPU (up to 600W)

  • Keep ambient temperature to 30°C or lower.
  • The following components are required in this configuration:
    • CPU TDP ≤ 250W: Standard heatsink
    • CPU TDP > 250W: Performance heatsink
      Note

      6732P processor is not supported.

    • Front high watts GPU air duct
    • Ultra fans for high watts GPU
  • Supports up to two high watts DW GPU adapters (400W to 600W) installed in Slot 21 and Slot 23 of PCIe riser assembly 7.
  • Supports RDIMM with capacity up to 256 GB per module.
  • Supports MRDIMM.
  • Keep ambient temperature to 25°C or lower when ThinkSystem NVIDIA BlueField-3 B3220 VPI QSFP112 2P 200G PCIe Gen5 x16 Adapter is installed.
    Note
    Slot priority of installing BlueField-3 B3220 Adapter: Slot 4 > 7 > 3 > 6 > 5 > 8

Liquid-cooled configuration with Processor Neptune® Core Module

See Water requirements for water inlet temperature and other requirements.

  • Configuration with performance fans

    • Supports DW GPU adapters up to 400W.
    • Supports SW GPU adapters up to 150W.
    • Supports RDIMM with capacity up to 128 GB per module.
    • Ambient temperature management:
      • Keep ambient temperature to 35°C or lower when RDIMM capacity is lower than 96 GB per module.
      • Keep ambient temperature to 30°C or lower when RDIMM capacity is lower than 128 GB per module.
  • Configuration with ultra fans

    • Supports DW GPU adapters up to 400W.
    • Supports SW GPU adapters up to 150W.
    • Supports RDIMM with capacity up to 256 GB per module.
    • Supports MRDIMM.
    • Ambient temperature management:
      • Keep ambient temperature to 35°C or lower when RDIMM capacity is lower than 128 GB per module.
      • Keep ambient temperature to 30°C or lower when one of the following components is installed:
        • RDIMM with capacity lower than 256 GB per module
        • MRDIMM
        • ThinkSystem NVIDIA BlueField-3 B3220 VPI QSFP112 2P 200G PCIe Gen5 x16 Adapter with active optical cable (AOC)
      • Keep ambient temperature to 25°C or lower when ThinkSystem NVIDIA BlueField-3 B3220 VPI QSFP112 2P 200G PCIe Gen5 x16 Adapter with direct attach cable (DAC) is installed.

      Slot priority of installing BlueField-3 B3220 Adapter: Slot 4 > 7 > 3 > 6 > 5

Liquid-cooled configuration with Processor Neptune® Core Module supporting front high watts GPU (up to 600W)

  • Keep ambient temperature to 30°C or lower.
  • The following components are required in this configuration:
    • Front high watts GPU air duct
    • Ultra fans
  • Supports up to two high watts DW GPU adapters (400W to 600W) installed in Slot 21 and Slot 23 of PCIe riser assembly 7.
  • Supports RDIMM with capacity up to 256 GB per module.
  • Supports MRDIMM.
  • Supports ThinkSystem NVIDIA BlueField-3 B3220 VPI QSFP112 2P 200G PCIe Gen5 x16 Adapter .
    • Keep ambient temperature to 30°C or lower when BlueField-3 B3220 Adapter is with direct attach cable (DAC).
    • Keep ambient temperature to 25°C or lower when BlueField-3 B3220 Adapter is with active optical cable (AOC).
